EXETER TO GET A NEW POST
OFFICE.
Ottawa, Feb. 21—Requesting as
early start as possible in the spring
on harbor improvement works, for
which $205,000 has been placed in
the estimates, a large delegation
from Goderich waited an Icon. J. C.
Elliott, K. C., Minister of Public
Works, yesterday.
The Minister informed the delega-
tion, headed by Mayor H. J. A. , Ale-
c
Ewan. and introduced to him by F.
Wellington Hay, Liberal member for
North Perth, that the Federal Gov-
ernment intends to do all it can,
within reason, to make Goderich the
port it should be. He said every ef-
fort would be made to initiate- the
work early in; the season, if Parlia-
ment approves the departmental et-
thnates at an early date.
'Phe Minister gave the delegation
details. of the proposed expenditure
this coming summer as follows:—
Completion Forest dredging control,
$70,000; completion Jackson Curr-
struction Company contract on north
pier, $22,000 and 343,000 on moving
wharf; completion Vance Construc-
tion Company contract on south pier,
$9,500; Kilmer and Barber dredging
contract, $5,000; improved dockage
accommodation, $5,000, and a start
on $143,000 contract for partial re-
moval of ship island ror improving
turning, base in the inner harbor,
$50,000.
National Port.
The delegation emphasized the
fact that Goderich. is "a national
port,” handling over 20,000,000 hurls
els of grain yearly, having a winter
fleet of 22 boats, of ,which 16 are
American, and supplying a large
section of Western. Ontario with
grain for flour and feed,purposes, It
was stated also that the Goderich
Elevator and Transit Company in-
tends spending upwards of $350.000
this summer on a million -bushel an-
nex to its present elevator capacity.

ment of Public Works tabled in the
Dominion House at Ottawa on Mon-
day. The estimates provide for
$21,000 for a public building, While
the estimates have not as yet receiv-
ed the approval of the House they

building may be erected this sum-
mer,
