puzzled by the fact that their bees
died off during the winter although
properly protected against the cold
weather, and also provided with an
abundance of supplies of winter
feeding honey in the comb, and in
consequence he had made a special
study of the situation.
The Dominion apiarist discovered
that the deaths of the bees were due
to an insidious poison compact in the
wild flowers from which he bees had
gathered nectar in season, the trouble
being that poisonous qualities had
developed long after the season was
ended. The honey gathered from
fruit blooms and dandelions in the
spring of the year, if kept until win-
ter, proved fatal to the bees, giving
them what Mr. Gooderham called
"apricultural ptomaine poisoning."
He found out also 'that nectar gatle
ered in the fall from goldenrod or
wild asters became pgison in the
winter store of food for the bees.
Other dangers to {bees came
through the use of sprays and pow -
tiers to prevent fruit trees from at-
tack by caterpillars, worms and
bugs, Mr. Gooderham said.
