Oen old friends,, Jno. Barnhill and
wife, arrived back to Brussels this week
from their long visit to, Scotland. They
had• a very rough passage coming home.
It is about a year since they went to the
land of the leal. We welcome them

and was a general favorite with the boys,

ment was made at Berlin cemetery on
Tuesday afternoon of this week,
Base BALL,—Last Monday afternoon a
nine captained by "Racket" Smith had a
contest with the Victoria baso ball club,
on Victoria Square, for a new ball. The
]atter were a little too heavy for their
opponents and won the matoh by 9 runs.

ON Thursday afternoon of sleet weak
Robb. Martin, a former resident of this
'Moslity, now living near Clinton, was in
town endeavoring to ascertain the where-
abouts of a valuable mare stolen from
hie stable a few weeks ago. The thief,
or thieves also took a buggy and set of
harness from Mr. Martin's neighbor and
thus seonred the outfit for the journey.
No particular trace has been diecovered
of any of tbo stolen property. Mr. Mart-
in valued his boast at about 4200 and
people who know the kind of stock ho
keeps will not have any trouble in taking
it for granted, A. reward of 450 is offer-
ed for the recovery of the property end
the apprehension of the thief.

Roar. ARMSTRONG, brother to George
Armstrong, was holidaying it for several
days in Brussels. He is learning the
watchmaking and jewelry business at
Arthur.
R. Mineola; furniture dealer, made
two neat and substantial tilting shaving
chairs and stools for 8. H. Laird. They
were trimmed with pink plush and show-
ed to good advantage.

paying 9215 for her. This will make
Mr. D's stook count three and all well
bred. He is well satisfied with the two
former and this last addition will, prob-
ably, be the best of all.
IN the matter of the conveyance of
mails from Gerrie to Seaforth over
which there has been some dispute, Wm.
Biernes, whose tender was the lowest,
has circulated petitions, we understand,
in whish the persons signing them certi-
fy as to the reliability of himself and
sureties in fulfilling the contract. The
petitions have been forwarded to the
Postmaster General.
Miss RACHEL ALEXANDER secured let
prize in Ladies' Arohery at the Wing -
ham Caledonian games on Thursday of
last week by scoring 110 points. The
prize was a handsome silver butter dish.
Mrs. Alexander got Ord prize, a large oil
painting of Mary Queen of Scots. In
the local competition Percy Jackson was
awarded a very neat silver medal for bak-
ing 1st place in putting the shoulder
atone.

TENNIS.—On Thursday afternoon of
Met week the Brussels Lawn Tennis
club played the return match with the
Blyth club on the grounds of the latter.
After a close contest the visitors were
declared the winners. The following are
the scores : Cluff and Hutobinson beat
F. Tanner and MoBinnon 6-4, 2-6, 6-5.
Hargreaves and Straohan beat Shaw and
Milne, 6-6, 4.6, 6-5. For Blyth, C. Tan-
ner and Hamilton beat Waterer and
Rose, 8-6, 6.0, 6-1. The Brusselites were
treated very hospitably by the home
club.

is anything people should not be negligent
of it is registering the births of their
children, but whether it is bashfulnoee on
the part of happy fathers or carelessness,
the clerks of the various municipalities
nevertheless mourn the fact that people
are very slow about making the very im-
portant registration. All those to whom
this applies should take warning; as
there is a heavy fine for such an offence.
Of this fine a large portion goes to the

Rev. M. Swann and J. H. Young.
A HME BALL match is talked of between
two local nines, both outside of the organ-
ized clubs, to be played some afternoon
in the near future. A new phase of the
game will be that a change has to be
made in the pitcher and oatoner every
innings. Some fun is promised.
WE have heard a rumor that the gang
of men working for Vanstone Bros., at
Elsinore, oame nearly being the victims
of poisoning by eating some canned
meat. People cannot be too careful in
leaving meats or feint in cans after be-
ing opened as the atmosphere appears
to interfere with the healthfulness of the
article.

leads the van, Last Saturday afternoon
he brought to our office 30 plums, of the
Lombard variety, that weighed 39
pounds. A large number of them meas-
ured 6x6S. inches, and the beet of it was
he had a tree loaded down with this
kind of fruit,
LAST Friday evening as the town Iiand
was parading Main street, previous to
the concert, a horse belonging to Thos.
Cardiff became restive. Thos. Newsome
took the animal by the bridal to hold it
when it reared and struck him in the
facie with one of its front feet inflicting a
nasty bruise on his right oheek. It was
a miraole that he was not more seriously
injured as he was thrown on the ground.

passed his examination for a 3rd class
teaobers' certificate, will attend the Clin-
ton High Sohool, commencing on the
13th inst. He has secured a school for
1888 in McKillop township. Mies Car-
rie MoKenzie will attend the Model at
Goderich, Thos. Xneolltel will put in a
term at the Goderioh High Sohool and
,Thos. MoLauohlin will continue a pupil
of our school, the two latter being too
young to have oertifioates granted them,
although they were successful oandi-
dates.

splendid spring near the terminus of
King street in arranging for, a drinking

2 cent mileage on the railroads.—Low
taxes, yet the rate sufficiently high
to enable the work of the corporation to
be properly done,—The plan of every
resident speak well of their own town
and not being backward in putting the
good points in as favorable a light as
possible.—Doing away with the Senate
entirely,—The suppression of the liquor

cessity of seeming a competing lino of
