following interesting program was carried
through :—Instrumental dnett, Miss

several selections. One of the most in-
teresting features of the evening's enter.
tainment was the Broom Brigade. It
was composed of DEEMS Addie Best,
Addis Vanetono, Annie Hargreaves, Nes-
eie Hay, Hattie Rogers and Lizzie Wil-
son in the front rank, and Misses Lottie
Hill, Rachel Alexander, Minnie Shaw,
Bertha Ball, Fannie Livingston and
Aggie Town. Their costume was white
cotton trimmed with turkey red, and
their implements of warfare broom, dust-
pan whisk. J. W. Shaw put the Brigade
through the various military evolutions
to the mesio of Smith's grand march. It
was good and took immensely, The
tenting scone was nicely. done. ' Messrs.
Whittingham and Turpin belong to the
Wizard Oil Company. They filled their
number's on the program in a very satis-
faotory manner. Prof. Whipple was not
on band owing, we believe, to illness in
his family. Miss Mods preeided at the
piano very oreditably. During the inter-
mies1On between the 1st and 2nd parts of
the program the chairman presented
grizeo from Miss O'Connor to the Misses

ried through without a hitch of any kind
and although there wile too much for the
money it was tidily enjoyed by the largo
audience.

BASE BALL.—Somebody has been "stuf-
fing" the editor of the Clinton New Era
about the base ball matole. Here is what
he says:—"A game of base ball was
played at Brussels, last Friday, between
the Clippers, of that town, and the Red
Stookinge, of Clinton, resulting in a well
earned victory for the Reds, by a score
of 24 to 81. The Clippers had scoured
the services of a crack battery for the oc-
casion, and owing to an objection raised
by the Reds (though unavailable) the
game was delayed until after 4 p. in. The
Rede played brilliantly the first three
innings, every effort of the Clippers to
score proving futile. At this juncture,
the score stendi g 7 to 0, Turnbull, from
a bad out in his right hand, lost control
of the hall, and the Clippers gradually
gained ground. Everything went on
smoothly until the last half of the ninth
innings, with Brussels at the bat, and
two men out, when a howling snob of
hoodlums, led on by a painter, rushed in
upon the grounds, and objected to a de-
rision of the umpire. Upon his refusal
to recall his decision, he and the Clinton
playere were surrounded by the angry
mob, who were not willing to see their
heroes of eight consecutive games defeat-
ed, and for a time it was thought a second
Biddnlph tragedy would be enacted, The
Reds escaped unhurt, with the exception
of Turnbull, who had a shoe spike driven
into his leg by one of the Clippers."
i1`loTE DY EDSToa.—To let the above pre0-
bous article go without contradictionor
correction would be to put Brussels in
a false light. let of all there was no
"well-earned victory," as even umpire
Barge called it a draw on the 8th innings,
and the Red Stocking left the field in
the 9th innings with only two men out,
according to their own count. 2nd, The
game announced for 8 p. m. was delayed
only in waiting for members of the Olin-
ton team who wore playing in the Do-
herty Band at the Guelph tournameut,
Our boys were in the field for an hour
before the game started. Brd, The state-
ment that everything went smoothly un-
til the 9111 innings is manufactured out
of whole cloth. Even Barge, the one.
sided umpire, and 10th man for Clinton,
will not have "gall" enough to back that
statement up. 4th, The gush about the
howling mob is about as true as the
"heroes of eight consecutive games," as
that was the first game the Clippers
played for three years. The reference to
Biddulph makes this report very tragical
and is the biggest lie in the whole yarn.
5th, From the wording of the report giv-
en above persons would think Turnbull
had been set upon by the crowd, when he
met with his accident at let base by com-
ing in contact with the base runner. We
don't blame the editor of the Era, as he
did not witness the match, hut whoever
supplied the supposed feels knew he was
not telling the truth. Ittwas not a pleas-
ant way to end the game we I4now. Um-
pire Barge was in danger ofbeing slapped,
and he abould have been put under the
band stand long before the Atli innings.
He brought 11 all ori himself. The two
clubs played very agreeably the most of
the afternoon, bur Urge did the. "mon•
key" business. If his ooalp can be pre-
served the Red Stookinge will never 'lose
a game as long as leo is umpire. Wet had
hie pedigree before the game. The Red
Stockings can't beat, rho Clippers and
they know 11 and our bays are quits
ready to prove their superiority en neutral
rounds, with a square umpire, any
