In a mulling match at Sydney, N. S.
W„ Kemp defeated Matterson by 20

sult. Matterson lodged a protest against

The town of Paris has got a "corpora-
tion baby," and the town fathers are at
a loss to know what bo do with it. The
Clerk objects to receiving it and plaoing

A young man named Leopard, from
Palmerston, brakeman on the G. T. R.,
got ono of his feet caught in a frog at
the Junction at Guelph, and run over
and crushed so badly that be died about
an hone afterwards.
General Manager Van Horne, of the
C. P. R., is the authority for saying that
the Mayors of Toronto, Montreal and
London will be knighted in honor of the
Queen'e Jubilee. He says he has seen
a telegram from Windsor Castle to that
effect.
A number of sporting men attending
the St. Thomas races were enjoying a
game of poker in a room at a hotel,
when a colored sport walked in, and being
considered green was invited to take a
hand. In an hoer 8462 was won by biro'
after which he walked out and took the
train for Detroit.
During the month of Tune, fires in
Canada and the United States destroyed
810,182,100 worth of property, a loss far
above the average for the same month
during the last ten years. This brings
the total for the first six months of 1887
up to 802,921,600, against 453,900,000 for
the corresponding six months of 1880.
From all accounts the hay crop in Ma.
nitoba this year will be rather on the
poor side. The extreme draught of last
year affected the roots somewhat, and the
rains of this summer did not come early
enough to give it a good start. It is im.
proving steadily under the late rains,
but at the best it will be only an average
crop.
A suit which will be watched with in.
terest is that of Miss Wells, of Aylmer,
Ont., against the Independent Order of
Foresters. The claim is for the amount of
a 81,000 endowment certificate issued to
the late Dr. Wells, a charter member of
the Aylmer lodge, and the action brought
in the Queen's Bench Division of the
High Court.
The fame of Winnipeg as a moral and
religions city is going abroad throughout
the land. Public opinion of Washington
says: Winnipegigives the lie to the say-
ing that there isno Sabbath west of Chi-
cago. The streets are empty and the
churches full. There is said to be church
aeoomodation for 15,000 in a population
of 23,000, and it is all utilized. There is
no street est traffic, ail places of business
are closed, and the people enjoy one day
of true rest.
An affecting Beene ,was witnessed in
court at Montreal during the progress of
the ease of the young man Herbert
Taylor, who is being tried on the charge
of forging the name of Hon. J. G. Blaine,
Whilst the examination was proceeding
the father of the young man, who had
just arrived from Worcester, Mass., en.
tared the room. The meeting between
father and eon was most affecting, and
the young man was so overcome by hie
disgrace that he fainted, and it was
some time before the case 000ld proceed.
A. gigantic lottery swindle has just
been unearthed at Montreal. The Chief
of Police has received a number
of onquirin from parties in the States
asking for information about a finanoial
firm named 11. Bede & Co., of Montreal.
Atacompanied with the letter, was a
glowing prospectus of a grand legal lot-
tery in aid of theparish of St. Maro, P.
Q. The first prize was of the value of
440,000, and 10,000 prizes of different
values. Tickets were 42 each. The
tickets have been held by agents all over
the States. The post office authorities
discovered that the whole lottery was a
gigantic swindle, and stopped letters at
the box and sent them back to their
owners. Chief Paradis oommunioeted
with St. Mare's ohuroh authorities and,
as was expected, found they knew noth-
ing of or had authorized the lottery.
