A LITTLE BOY'S PIECE,
I am 411010 tempperauoo boy,
And shall do all I can;
Then when I grow up big
I'll be a temperance man,
I've lately eigned the pledge,
And mean to keep it too ;
Pll never drink a bib of beer,
Or swear, or smoke, or chew.
My mother says moll boys
Make honest men, and true ;
We'll dght for house and native land,
And groat the good we'll do.
HOW SWEET TS TfIE REWARD.
Tis but a little thing to do,
To lend a helping hand
To ono who stumbles on the road,
And has not power to stand ;
And if a simple touch of Duro
Can health and hope afford,
And joy impart
To one sad heart,
How sweet is our reward 1
'Tis but a little thing to speak
A tender word of cheer,
To soothe and calm the troubled soul
Oppressed with doubt or fear ;
It is not much to turn aside
Sweet solaao to afford
At Pity's call;
The gift is small
Yet great is the reward.
Tho seed we scatter for and wide,
Along the mellow field,
Will find a lodgement in the soil,
And rioh abundance yield;
And everywhere the loving heart
May oast its precious gold,
Yet feelno lack
For it all Domes back,
Ineroased a hundredfold.
Flow rich the reoompenee we win
For favors slight and small I
How little cause we have to fear '
That we shall lose our all 1
And yet how many, miser -like,
Their precious treasures hoard
From day to day—
Give naught away—
And miss the sweet reward 1
JUBILEE 1 OR BALAAM ON
HORSEBACK.
"Butths Angel of the Lord stood in a
path of the vineyards, a wall being on
this side and a wall being on that side.
And when she saw the Angel of the Lord
she thrust herself unto the wall and
crushed Salaam's foot against the wall
and ho smote her again. • * And
Baleen's anger was kindled and he
smote the ass with his staff, And the
Lord opened the month of the ass"—
Nnmhers XX1 chapter.
"Daniel shall judge his people as ono
of the tribes of Israel, Daniel shall be
a serpent by the way, an adder in the
path, that bitoth the horse's heel, so his
rider shall fall backwards."—Genesis
XLIX.
Israel came to town to see
The glories of the Jubilee ;
Rain descended a deluge shower,
Israelites looked quite sour.
Perishable goods would be lost,
Obtained with so nhuoh labor, cost ;
Flags and arolies beading with rain,
None could from murmuring refrain.
Proud cedars from Lebanon all
World soon from civic arches fall ;
Clouds burst asunder, Sal appeared,
All hearts were in a moment cheered.
Gloom disappeared, a sky sereno
Welcomed Jubilee of our Queen ;
A grand procession marched that day
With music grand and colors gay.
The rush, the orush, the smiling faces,
The High School ladies queenly graces
And youthful pupils might be seen
Marching in honor of the Queen.
Daniel, the Prophet, you might see
Celebrating the Jubilee ;
And on his banner might be seen
The likeness of our beloved Queen,
Drawn by Krupp, at Wade's that day
Which made the very best display.
Daniel was in the Lion's Den, [men ;
Bub they were tame compared with
When Damel appeared on the highway
Victoria's golden wadding day.
A. biped lion on a horso
Did Israel and Daniel curse ;
His horse before procession ran
To trample underfoot old Dan,
"How dare you before procession march ?
How darn you pass 'neath neared arch ?
How dare you flaunt unholy rag,
It's not the Queen but some old hag."
Wild Relearn then on horseback sprung
His saber like one possessed swung,
Swearing "I'll trample down Old Dan ;
What euro I for Law, God or Mao?
.Have not I power, riches, salt,.
From slaying Daniel will I halt ?"
Balsam spurred horse Dan to trample,
Of him to matte a great example ;
That nano should darn walk before him,
But all worship the idol Tim.
"No," spoke the horse, like Balsam's nes,
''Over Daniel I cannot pass,
His angel stands beside Good's wall ;
I cannot trample Dan at all,
Re is an adder in the path,
A flaming sword hie angel hath.
Know, like your prototype of old,
If Good's house was silver and gold
I can't go beyond the word of God;
My sides with your spurs do nob prod,
I moot obey the word of the Lord
Nor venture against His angel's sword.
Don'tdomfneer or tyraniso
For tyrants God and man despise,
O'er the prophet I won't trot
Dan will not kneel 'fors juggernaut.
I have boon trained by T. K. Burk,
HO's a Christian, you're a Turk ;
THE BRIJSSEL,S POST
I'll show my Woke in his great show,
But will not trample Daniel's toe."
Balaani cursed, ripped, epurrodand ewore
'Stop; epake the bores, 'Belem give
If your a brute a horse has fooling, [o'er;
bap, or in Rodeo you'll be squealing.
Salt won't preserve your camas, soon
You'll rot like any poor poltroon;
Your name will stink before mankind.
Ono sterling friend you will not And.
You're without God, reason or grace,
You'd spit in God Almighty's face ;
You slighted anointed preachers,
You insulted High Sulhool teachers.
Remember you're only a man,
How dare you ride me over Dan ;
The best Loyalist over seen
Carries the picture of your Queen,
Taken at Wade's. My sides, 0 Sir,
Please do not thrust me with that spur,
I cannot trample on Dan at all,
How can I jump through a brick wall?
Gentiles will about you talk
For driving me on the sidewalk ;
To kill a cripple like old Dan,
They'll say you're more devil than man.
If Dan can't walk on the highway,
Are sidewalks for us horses, pray ?
By John's rode amuck who will
Attempt a fellow man to kill.
Second Belem please be civil [davit ;"
Or you'll shame your best friend, the
Stop, Balaam, or there'll be a row 1
Daniel has come to judgment now.
