a meeting to be held at Toronto on the
28th inst.. to a• range fou the formation
of a Provincial Farmers' Institute. The
Directors of our Institute meet on Satur-
day afternoon at the American hotel,
Brussels, to talk over the matter.
Ox Friday evening of this week, at 5
o'clock, the annual meeting of the Brus-
sels Mechanics' Institute will be held in
the Reading Room, to receive the annual
report, elect officers for the current year
and transaot such other business as may
some before the meeting. A large attend-
ance desired,

UNDER a new arrangement between the
two chief Canadian railways -the G. T.
and C. P. -the shippers of live etook will
be deprived of the usual passes. A ship-
per of stook will in future reactive a pose
which will entitle him to ride on the
train with his stook only. If he wishes
to take a passenger train he will have to
pay hie fare. In addition to this, no
passes will be issued to return from
Montreal.
BLACK peon -The St. Tbomae Journal
has the following: -Tele desease, known

most of the plum trees in this section,
has now taken hold of the cherry trees
sad also attacked the pear trees. Unless
steps are taken to eradicate the disease
the cherry and pear trees will also be dos-
troyed. An Aot of Parliament provides
for the punishment of parties who neglect
to tate steps to eradicate the disease,
and some one should be appointed to see
that the law is carried out.
MILLINERY OPENINGS, -Last week F.
0. Rogers announced the spring opening
of his millinery department and the in-
vitation to the ladies to call wee accepted
by a great many. Mise Green, she mill-
iner, had everything arranged in extra
neat style showing off her handiwork to
good advantage. There was on exhibi•
tion hats and bonnets for all ages and a
large number of sales made and orders
taken. Heliotrope appears to he one of
the leading colors this spring' Mr, Rog-
ers is very well satisfied with the way
trade is opening up and expects a large
increase 111 his millinery business.
A. R. Semen's millinery opening took
place on Friday and Saturday of last
week and the number of visitors, millin-
ery sold end orders taken exceeded any
of the past seasons. Miss Lack showed
her go el taste in the neat arrangement of
the millinery room, and the nicely trim-
med hats and bonnets were duly admir-
ed. Mr. Smith says they have a better
Wass of millinery allow prices than they
have ever exhibited before mel he feels
assured they will °onliuend a very largo
trade. To give a description of the
shapes, styles, &e., would take up too
much space, even if we were competent
for the task. An easier way for you to
find out will bo to visit both ostablieh-

Weeenas Wise. -The following table
was constructed by the celebrated Dr.
Herschell upon a philosophic consider-
ation of the attraction of the sun and
moon. It ie confirmed by the experience
of many years observation and will sug-
gest to the observer what kind of weath-
er will probably follow the 11100115 en-
trance into any of her quarters. As e
general rule it will be found wonderfully
correct. If the moon changes at 12
o'clock, noon, the weather undoubtedly
after will be very rainy if in summer and
will be snow and rain in winter, If be-
tween 2 and 4 o'clock p.m. changeable in
summer, fair and mild in winter. Be-
tween 4 and 6 p.m., fair in both summer
and winter. Between 6 and 10 p.m. in
summer fair if the wind is N.W. rainy,
if S. or S.W. in winter fair and frosty,
wind if N. or N.W., rainy if S. or S.W.
Between 10 and 12 p.m. fair in summer,
fair and frosty in winter. Between 12
night and 2 a.m. fair in summer and
frosty in winter, unless the wind le S. or
S.W. Between 2 and 4 a.m. cold and
showery in summer, snow and stormy in
winter. Between 4 and 6 a.m. rainy
both summer and winter. Between 6
and 8 a.m. wind and rain in summer,
stormy in winter. Between 8 and 30 s.
