The Rev. T. Benefield, of Kingston,'
Ont., has in his collection a Franklin
cent, has also the much more rare Wash-
ington cent of 1791, of which thereare
believed to be only six in existeuee. He
has also the 1783 cent, which is quite
valuable. The 1791 cent which he has
is in perfect order and a butter coin than
is in the U.S. mint at Washington.

Mr. Cormier, M. P. P. for Ottawa
County, recently received an intimation
that the wife of one of his constituents,
Mrs. Luke C. Ryan, of Stagsburh, on the
Gatineau river, had given birth to trip-
lets, and as it is understood the Qlxeen'a
bounty is no longer extended in connec-
tion with such events, kir. Cormier head-
ed a subscription and raised 9100 for her
among the members of the House.
The Auditor -General's report shows
that the total payments on account of the
Franchise Act up to the lith April, 1887,
was $352,878, but this includes only part
of the salaries to revising officers. The
payments have been as follows:—Ad-
vances to revising officers on account of
salaries, 944.729 ; expenses of revision,
0124,873; printing first list, 9109,481;
printing second lists, 953,408; printing
third lista, 517,093. The total expendi-
ture in connection with putting the Aot
in operation will be about double the
amount paid out.
The prize list of the Ontario Artillery
Aasociatton for 1887 is as follows :—Field
General efficiency, 1st prize 550; 2nd,
930; 3rd, 520. Aggregate acmes, firing,
sat prize, 930; 2nd, 920 ; 8rd, 510. High.

erator Fowler, of the M.C.R., forbidding

Lieutenant -Governor Dewdney has
gone to Long Lake to arrange a site for
an indnstrisl school in connection with
the Presbyterian mission.
The St. Clair River tunnel on the Can-
adian side is now 230 feet in from the
shaft, and the work is being pushed and
is making satiefactory progress.
Woodstock claims a population of 8,-
000, and the assessment jest completed
shows a total valuation on 52,082,175—
an increase over lest year of 5225,555.
Wm. Brown, of Tiverton, is one of the
oldest printers on record. He worked on
newspaper, book andjob work in Scotland
for forty years, and ie now 89 years of
age.
It is reported that George J. Brown,
the Springfield operator who caused the
recent wreak on the M.C.R„ has return-
ed home and that he was in Aylmer ou

A well•to•do Plympton farmer, in
search of a wife, dropped into Watford
the other day, was introduced to a pretty
widow and settled tho whole business in•
side of twenty hours.
A. telegram was received in St. Thome&
Monday stating that negotiations were
pending for the settlement of the suit
brought by Barnum against the Grand
Trunk Company to recover damages for
the loss of 'Jumbo." Quite a number of
citizens were to have left for New York
to give evidence in the case.
The report of the Postmaster -General
states that 211 new postofficee were open-
ed in Canada last year. The total postal
revenue was 92,468,747, and the total ex-
penditure 53,380,429, showing a net loss
of nearly 51,000,000. Of the total post -
office revenue 51,893,600 was collected in
Ontario. The deposits in postofilce say-
ings
ayiugs banks increased by $2,068,832 lest
yeer.
The public accounts for the fiscal year,
1886, show that the gross public debt of
the Dominion on the 30th June last was
$278,163,341, an increase of $8,461,734
over what it was at the same slate in
1885. The total estimated value of the
Dominion assets on the 30th June was
$50,005,234, a decrease of over 518,000,-
000 in one year, leaving the net public
debt $223,159,107. 5 h total revenue
received last year was 533,117,040, and
the total expenditure 839,011,612 leaving
a deficit of 56,834,572.

A sensational poisoning case has been
unearthed at Thedford by the arrost of
Mrs. Martha Jane Ryokman, charged
with the murder of hersistsr-in-law, Mrs.
Hendrioks. Startling stories are now
told of the mysterious death of eight of
Mrs.lsyckman'e relatives, all of whom
are now suspected to have been the vic-
tims of poisoning at her hand. These
are Laura Ryokman, her daughter-in-law
who died last fall ; her sinter -m -law, Mrs.
Hendricks ; Gray Ryakmau, Laura's
husband ; Mrs. R,yckmau's husband ;
John Hackett, her son-in-law, follower
soon after by hie widow and little giel.
All of these died under suspicions air•
cumetancee, and in some oases the bodies

At Garden Hill, on Saturday morning,
the farm house of John Robb, situated
half a mile from the village, caught fixe,

somewhat older, were chopping in the
woods a quarter of a mile from the

has been sentenced to four years im.

Police Magistrate Denison refused to
endorse the warrant for the arrest of le.
E. Sheppard, editor of the Toronto Howe,
which the Montreal High Constable, Bi&-
souette, presented to him for andoreation
on Saturday. The giouud taken by the
Magistrate was that it was alleged that
the object of the warrant was to get Mr.
Sheppard into Montreal and have him
arrested on another eharge of oriminal
libel beside the one specified in the war-
rant before bins. He said the law did
not make it compulsory for him to eign
the warrant.
Last week the Sunday school teachers
of St. Andrew's Presbyterian church,
etratbroy, desirious of giving Hon. G.W.
Ross, Minister of Education, before leav-
ing for his new home in Toronto, a token
of esteem and a memorial of his connec-
tion with the school, 'Presented him with
a very handsome cloak with a suitable
inscription. The presentation took plane
at the house of Hector Urquhart. The
Rev. Thos. Macadam, in a few seutencee,
expressed the regret of the school at los-
ing Mr. Ross' invaluable services, the
personal regret of his fellow -teachers on
account of the departure of one whose
presence always brightened their labors,
and the best wiahes of all for the pros
perity of Mr. Ross and his family. kir.
Ross suitably acknowledged the gift.
A farmer in Luther was awakened on
Tuesday night last by some person prowl-
ing about in hie residence. He arose,
and with his eon drove the intruder out
and fired some shots after him. The
burglar had taken a blanket from the
hone which he dropped in the flight, and
made hie escape into a swamp opposite
the place, When matters bad quieted
down a sleigh containing two confederates
which had been hid from view behind the
barn was driven rapidly away and picked
up number throe when he emerged from
the swamp some distance down the road.
In their hurried departure one of the
horses dropped a shoe which the farmer
picked up. By the horse shoe, and with
the aid of the blacksmith who made it,
the farmer was able to identify bie mid-
night visitors, and had a highly interest-
ing interview with them, which, it is
said, resulted in all parties being bound
to secrecy.
