A largo number of our citizens turned
out an Friday last and gave themselves
some exercise in clearing the sidewalks of
the snow.
Work hes begun on the railroad bridge
here. For its completion a largo number
of men are employed and are pushing the
structure rapidly.
Good Friday was obse.ved here as usu-
al; all places of ,business -being closed.
Services were held in the different church-
es during the day.
On Tuesday morning last smoke was
observed coming from the roof of the
Queen's hotel, the roof having taken fire.
The flames were soon extinguished and
no eerious damage done.

Report hos it that Mr. Connover, of
Bluevale, hos bought out the hotel owned•
by John Patterson. Of course Mr. Con-
over knows his own business, but it will
not be amiss to remind hum of the Scott
Act.
Rev, Mr. McCartney was in town on
Friday of last week. IIs says that things
are along way behind up here and re-
ports dry roads and land almost fit for
cultivation. That's all very well but
wait till we get started.
Mrs. Leeoh, who has been visiting
frionds in this vicinity for soma turns
bank, left for her home in Wiarton en
Saturday morning. She was waved an
affectionate farewell by her many friends
from the station platform.
A sleighload of young folks went from
here to the examination at No. 7 last
Thursday. Judging from their marry
shouts and joyful peals of laughter ea
they drove into town in the evening, it
may be safe to say they had a pleasant
time.
The dam received a pretty good shake
on Sunday last.All that were on it ran

confidence in it, and the old dam was
true to its deters and loyal to the town,
and whon those who expected the break
opened their eyes they had the pleasure
of seeing Mr. Nixon and the dam still the

Lean, of the Expositor, died at Guelph

pointed town ticket agent for the Grand
Trunk railway.
W. D. Stewart drew the dressing case
at I. V. Fear's drug store. There were
1400 tickets taken and Mr. Stewart's
number was 483.
Rev. J. Edmonds, who is about to leave
here, has been presented on behalf of the
members of St. Thomas church with an
adobieos and a purse filled by contribu-
tione from members of the congregation.

J. A. Tanner, the recently appointed
Head Master of the Listowel Hish School,
beean his duties on Monday of last week.
The United Brethren Conference, which
recently closed et Port Elgin, appointed
the Rev. J. Love as pastor of the Listowel
Ohureh.
A gang of thieves are operating in the
neighborhood of Listowel. Wheat, har-
ness, fowls, &o„ have been stolen, but the
climax was reached on Sunday night,
when about 10 cwt. of door was stolen
from John Berthman'e granary. Mr.
.Berthman is at present mak with typhoid
fever, a fact the thieves 'were probably
aware o1.
J. C. Hay, of Listowel, owned two cows
—one a pet Dorsey and the other a com-
mon, every -clay cow. Recently ho Bold
the latter animal to a local botcher, who
sent e, hired man after her to have her
killed. The hired man went to Mr. Hay's
stable, took out the Jersey and brought
her to the slaughter.house. When Mr.
Hay noticed the mistake it was too late
to save his valuable pet.
The Agricultural Society having failed
in scouring support to warrant the hold-
ing of a spring show, the mutter was tak-
en hold of by a few of our enterprising
citizens, with the result that a subscrip-
tion list of 8100 was run up in a abort
time, and an Association formed, to be
known as the Listowel Spring Stock
Show. The following ofioors were ap-
pointed: President, Adam Hese;' Boo,-
Treas., Jas. Mennen ; Directors, A. Mo-

was decided to hold a spring stook dhow
on Thursday, April nlet.
The annual meeting of the Listowel
Agricultural and Driving Park Assooia-
tion was held et the Royal hotel on Tues-
day evening of last week, there being a
fair representation of the stook -holders
present. The Soaretary, J. P. Mabee,
read the report for the past year, which
showed that the purchase money for the
land, amounting to 20 acres, was 82,000,
of which 8000 had been paid. Since the
purehaso of the property there has boon
spent in draining, fencing and track
building about81,000, paid ont of the paid
up stook. The total amount of capital
stock is 88,000, which can at any time be
iuoreaeed when necessary. The track
whioh 15115 built last year is one of the
best half mile hawks in the Provinoe, and
was laid nut in acaordauoe with the rules
given by the "Turf, Field and Farm" for
ts•aok building. It ie 0011 feet in length
on each side, and 450 feet across the in -
Side between the tracks. The trank it;

A deputation consisting of J. A. Morton
and Geo. McKay, has been appointed by
the railway and county town committee
to go to Toronto and interview the At-
torueyGeneral as to the prospects of
Wingham being made a county town.
On Thursday of last week, as some
children were playing around the barn
adjoining the British Hotel, discovered
the body of a newly.born infant, which
was perfectly nude. The children notifi-
ed the hotel people, who, in turn, inform-
ed Chief Pettypiece, who took charge of
the body and conveyed it to the Town
Hall and Coroner Towler empanelled a
jury, who viewed the romaine, heard the
physicians' statements end then adjourn.
