DECitSED,-Tile Virden Advance of
Feb, 10th says in reference to a former
resident of this place :-Last Monday the
inhabitants of Virden were startled by
the intelligence that Miss HattieEnglish,
second daughter of Geo. English, had ex.
pined after a verve fow hours illness. Tito
doceaeod was universally beloved and re.
spectral, and her removal will be mourned
by a very large. circle of friends. Tho
funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon
last, from the Central hotel, the Rev. J.
H. L. Joslyn conducting the service. As
a mark of respect rho business places
were closed. Between thirty and forty
cutters and wagons followed the remains
to the grave, and there must have been
nearly 200 pereon5 present.
marriages were December and Combo- ;
January and November were pretty good;
but in July, May and August the busi-
ness hardly paid expenses. In respect to
ages, 148 males and 2,087 females were
married under 20 years ; ono sprightly
old gentleman of 82 wedded a spinster of
69; an evergreen yenth of 72 united
himself with a maiden of 22, and a man
of 45 married a grand -mother of 70 ; 18
girls warn married at 15, and 3 children
at 14 -poor things, God help them. The
probabilities of marriage aro, that of
women at 20 years of age, three-quarters
will be married ; 25 years of age, one
quarter will be married; 30 years, one
tenth; of men aged 25, one-half.
TseE Wingham Tithes says :-A series
of skating races were held in the rink
here on Friday evening last. Tieo first
one, for boys under 14 year, was a good
one, those being four entries and was won
by Jooky Anderson. The matched race
between Comm and Smith was a regular
hippodrome, Cornyn purporly losing the
race, It was perfectly plain to bo seen
from the beginning that Cornyn was the
faster skater, and all through the race he
515 just what he liked. A groat many
of the epootators wore down on Cornyn
for noting in the way ho did, but when it
is known that on the afternoon of the
race the Brussels mon backed down and
the stake money, which was held by a
Brusselite, was rofsnded them, and they
would not allow Smith to race unless
Cornyn's backers would guarantee that
Smith would win the rano, it will not be
wondered at that Cornyn acted the way
ho did. We thinlc that the Brussels mot
anted very shabbily over the matter, and
it is they who ought to bo censured in-
stead of Cornyn, [In regard to rho above
item there aro several direct falsehoods
that can be proven to be such. let, There
was not a cent of money on the 2nd,
hence it could not bo withdrawn. ,
It was at ileo suggestion of Cornyn's
backers that the race was a "fixed" ono
with the expectation of "pulling" some of
the Winghamitos, ae Cornyn said tJeoy
would not bet against him, and the bobs
were to bo divided when Smith won with
the Brussels boys. An offer 'was made
to skate Smith against Cornyn, 0 fair
race, for 580, lett the Wingham men
world nob take it.!
