Ws regret to hear of the serious illness
of Geo. McKay. He tante home last
Saturday from London suffering with in-
flammatory rheumatism and been quite
ill since. This is the third attack of this
very dieagreablo complaint he has had.
As eclipse of the moon took place on
Tuesday morning, which was visiblehere.
Nearly one-half the moon's surface was
darkened. The eolipse commenced at a
quarter to three and was at its fullest at
five. Everything was serene again at
half -past seven.
WM. MARTIN is making arrangements
to build a briok residence on his very de-

in the Ontario Provincial elections will
be paid on the 17th inst. They number
Seventeen hundred.
Conductor Wm. Schneider, running on
the Grand Trunk from Palmerston to
Hamilton, has been converted and is
likely to leave the road and follow Sam
Jones' example, from whore 11e received
his first religious impressions. Schnei-
der was a comedian with the Townsends
years ago, and has the requisite qualities
to be a success in the line followed by the
two Sams, possessing unlimited humor
and plenty of Fab.
T. G. Shaughnessy, Assistant -General
Manager of the Canadian Pacific Rail-
way, speaking of the branch to Sault Sto,
Marie, says :-"Despite the legal pro-
ceedings talion by the Grand Trunit we
are rapidly extendibg our Algoma branch
to Sault Ste. Marie. The Canadian Pa-
cific is rushing forward track -laying at a
rapid rate and the Sault will be reached
ore many mouths elapnc. The number
of men employed just now is upwards of
600,"
At the sitting of the Orangeville Div-
ision Court, last week, Miss laurnard sued
Miss King for the value of an umbrella
alleged to have been lent Miss King by
her, but not returned by Miss Ring. The
plaintiff's evidence 2005 that Miss King
had borrowed a certain umbrella on two
different occasions from the plaintiff, but
did not return it the second time. This
was admitted by the defendant, relied on
the fact tha• the umbrella (whioh was
produced in court) was the ono she had
lost. Plaintiff contended the umbrella
produced was not the one she had lent
the defendant. The case occupied the
attention of the court fox' some time, ,and
the judgment was given for the defend-
ant.
Lottie Ashton, of Montreal, has been
arrested on a charge of having a boy
christened under a false name. She says
she was an inmate of the Western Hoepxt.
al in January, 1885, and on being dis-
elaarged she obtained an infant boy whom
she had taken a fancy to from the mat-
ron. is she intended to adopt the nulla,
she, though Protestant, had it christened
under her own name in St. Antoine
Church on March 7, 1885. The saee fe a
peculiar ono, as it is 'alleged the accused
has made two different parties believe
each teat he is the father of the child,
and has been receiving money for its
maintenaneefrom each. She was remand-
ed to jail, being allowed to take rho little
