DIED.— Last Saturday morning
death came to the release of Frank
Halliday, third eon of John C. Hall-
iday. Frank had been a great suff-
erer, having at the early age of 18
years contracted rheumatism, which
became chronic and crippled him up
a great deal. For the past two years
his health had been very poor and he
finally succumbed to consumption of
the throat and bowels. He was born
in Burgess, Co. of Lanark, in the
year 1855 and came to Brussels with
his parents 22 years ago. The de-
ceased was a smart turned youth, his
mind. running particularly on .11 ood
carving, &e. His death was a very
triumphant one and his friends had
every assurance that the fear of death
had been taken away. The funeral
on Monday afternoon was largely at-
tended the service being conducted by
Rev. S. Jones.

STEAM Firm ENGINE CILiLLENOE.—We clip
the following from the Montreal Gazette, of
June 4th. It speaks for itself anclgives Mr,
Chapman, of Montreal, a fitting opportunity
of substantiating his claim, if it can be
done :—Henry Chapman ea Go., of Mon-
treal, are issuing oiroulars throughout Can-
ada stating as follows :—"With pride we
may advise you that the 'Manatee fire en-
gine was selected by the Fire Committee of
Montreal in competition with eight others,
including Canadian manufacturers, and that
it ie the most powerful engine in the world,
oto., oto. And as the Fire Committee world
not allow my engine to oempete with the
Merryweather in open free market in Mon-
treal, and as the editor of the Star reported
that the Merryweather was of larger cap-
acity, of greater power and lighter than our
engine—also 9400 dearer. I wish to public-
ly prove allthese statements in the main
are untrue—the statement as to prion being
the only true one. It ie true it is somewhat
lighter, because we furnish many more use-
ful appliances. Our wheals are larger and
closer coupled. We will prove our draft to
be fully as light, if not lighter on heavy
roads. Inow take this plan to prove how
untrue and how misleading these statements
are and unjust to Canadian industries. I
will deposit 9500 in any bank in Montreal,
and ask Merryweather to do the same, both
engines to be thoroughly tested in all kinds
of severe practical fire duty in Montreal, and
thug find out which engine can throw water
farthest and highest with greatest force, at
a normal safe limit of 100 lbs. steam press-
ure, and also which engine is lightest to
haul. This test is the sum and substance
of a good effective fire steamer. I have
stated to the fire committee that our engine
would eclipse the Merryweather in every
test. I now wish to prove it praetioally : —
9200 of the above money to go to the flood
Shfferers' Fund, the balance to go to the
winner to recoup his expenses. If the fire
company aro in earnest in their selection of a
steamer best suited for the neosesities of
your city, they should pause Merryweather
to aedept this challenge, to prove to the cit-
izens which engine is the best. If I fail the
Flood Sufferers' Fund will be 9200 ahead.
If reversed Oanadian Industries are vindi-
cated, and their true character shown to
your people.
Trusting for an early acceptance,
JOHN D. RONALD,
Steam Fire Engine Builder.
Brussels, Ont., June 1,1886.
SOMEBODY writes Pica of the Tor-
onto News about the cost of starting
a newspaper andjob office. He re-
plies by saying :—My dear friend, I
really don't know. It depends al-
together upon the kind of shop you
want to open out. 11 you are a han•
dy man, willing to scratch along with
little material, prepared to whittle
quoins .out of shingle corners and
riglete out of fence stakes, why, as
the prospect for the turnip season is
good, and the oropof cordwood, coup.
led with cheap labour, likely :to be
plentiful, you can probably start bus-
iness with the expenditure of a few
hundred dollars, and keep 'from
starving until the walking gets good
next year. But if you want to put
on any frills, get cabinets With dis-
play type, fancy 2 borders, patent
chases; and power presses, the bill.
will run away up into thousands.
You can get It seoond•hand press
welded together by a blacksmith and
tied up with strings for $50; or you
can get a web perfecting double•pross
•as high as $35,000. You can get a
newspaper dress from $150 up to
$6,000, and yon can got job type for
any pries you like, • according to style
and quality. If you are yearning
with a mighty yearn to plunge into
the journalistic arena, and write
Words that will burn into the publio
intellect, you had better get a shingle
and piece of red ohalk and go out
bank of the barn and experiment on
an article headed "The .Mission of
the Boodle -Bagger." If that don't
cure you take poison. If you want
to go into printing as a business, sell
your house and lot, deed your earthly
possessions over to your wife, make
your will, and then come down here
and I'll show you around. Lots of
men rusts into journalism because
they think the penis mightier than
the sword. I saw some oheeeo yes-
terday, that for mitey-uses knocked
the glimmer off of either. ' They
ought to 01100e0 it.
