Tee bill introduced into the Domin •
ion Parliament to amend the election
law extending the hours of voting has
been defeated. A similar measure
met with the same fate in the Ontario
Legislature. -Polling places are near
enough to each other to give every
ratepayer an opportunity of voting be•
tween nine and five o'clock, without
extending the hours into the darkness
of the morning and evening.
The bill for, establishing experi•
mental farms passed through the
House without any opposition. It is
proposed to start one of these farme
in each province, the annual expense
of each being about $5,000. The
central farm will be near Ottawa and
consist of four or five hundred acres.
It is very generally thought they will
be of great benefit to the farming com-

in the United States and Europe.

sewn to bis jacket which read as fol-
lows : "This is Duncan Steel, going
to A. Fraser, Whitby." The little
fellow was banded over to the auth-
orities at the immigrant shade, where
he was cared for during the night.

In my last report, I alluded to the
effect of smoking upon young men at
college. A very considerable num-
ber of our students smoke, and not a
few of them are confirmed in the hab-
it. At present I shall not discuss
the question, but simply state one or
two. facts regarding the record of
smokers and non-smokers in this in-
stitution. In 1884 and '85, 58 of
our students received departmental
honors ; and 45 of these were non-
smokers. Within the last five years,
67 have taken diplomas ; and 48 of
them have been nonsmokers ; 14
have won medals, and 12 of them
have been non-smokers and non-
drinkers.—From the President's Re-
port, Ontario Agricultural College.
Wm. Young, a farmer in Covalent"
township, was married a few days
ago, and on Monday night some young
men proceeded to the house of his
father, Walter Young, where the new-

was in progress a window was raised
and the contents of a shot gun fired
into the crowd, hitting three of the
young men, one being severely wound.
ed. Fifteen grains of No. 2 shot were
found in his legs and groin, and he is

On his format lot 18, 6th con., east
of Whieby, Goo. Doidgo found, a
few days ago, buried among a number
of Indian ouriosities, a remarkably
well-preserved calender for the year
1747, made in bronze. The church
feasts, law terms, moons, &c., for the
year are set forth on one side of the
bronze, which is not larger than an
American dollar, and on the other
side are the Sundays for the whole
year. At the bottom of the ooin as
the imprint of the manufacturer—
Powell—followed by the old-fashioned
term, "feoit." The finding of Indian
relics in connection with the bronze
leads to the supposition that it was
either dropped by one of the enr'vsy-

Upper Canada m those days, or was
presented by such a party to the In-
diana, and loet or buried'by them.

—While in bed on the morning of the
11th inst., I saw the number xli, 85
pass before my vision. I was start-
led a little, and on recovering I at
once concluded this to mean a chapter

tors and verges in the Bible are mark.
ed. Without waiting to dress myself
I stepped to a bookoaee in an adjoining
room and took a Bible to see what
any such passage might bo found to
express. In searching for this special
number in chapter and verse I found
that only Genesis, Job, Psalms, Ise
lab, Jeremiah and Ezekiel contained
the chapter indicated, and that none
of these chapter but the one in Gene-
eis contained the spedifia verse. You
can imagine my surprise when I road
the following plumage :--"And let'

keep food in the cities." As soon au
I read the passage 1 concluded it was
