of last week the Brussels Branch of
the Women's Foreign Missionary So-
ciety held an entertainment in Mel-
ville church. Rev. J. Ross occupied
the chair. After the opening oxer-
cises the chairman stated that this
organization was fleet set on foot in
Canada in April 1876, with a mem-
bership of 50, wbioh has now inoreas-
e(1 to 5,080. At the end of the first
year there had been $1,005 collected.
This has inoroasod until for 1885 the
large sum of $18,498 is credited to
the Society. $18,000 had been asked
for and that amount had been over-
paid by nearly $500 During last
year 3 schools for Indians, 1 girl's
school in Formosa, 6 sohools in In-
dia, an hospital and other institutions
had been founded, During the past

' pounded the drum, steadily, for over
an hour. Law is threatened if it is
not stopped.
LAST Friday as Mrs. Graham and
Mrs.'Shaw were driving on the 8th
eon. of Grey the king bolt of the bug-
gy broke, allowing the front wheels
and axle to dissolve partnership with
the rest of the buggy. The buggy
was thrown forward until the top
reaohed the ground. Mrs, Graham
injured her knee quite severely and

soon captured and no further damage
was done. The wonder is that the
