Pater Murray, proprietor of the
Willie. Times, has been awarded $10
damages becalm the Toronto Globe
published an item stating that "Peter
Murray, of °ratio, was caught paiis•
ing a raised bill at Toronto." As
the verdiet of the Cow:: carried costs
the Globe will have to pay several
hundred dollars altogether for the
crime of publishing the item quoted
above. It happened in this way e A
mau was arrested in Toronto for pints-
ing a raised bill, He gave his name
as Peter Murray and his residenee as
Sarnia. Police Court reporters know
that prisoners frequently give their
names and addresses incorrectly.
Willie listening to the ease, the re-
porter heard a policeman say. "Tina
is the name of the editor of the Gr-
ine Times." He therefore -wrote in
his report in his report, "Peter Mur-
ray, of instead of "Peter Mur-
ray, of Sarnia." Mr. Murray, of
haetened to Toronto and point.
ed out the mistake. 11 was promptly
corrected in blur Globe, Then he had
his lawyer write to the Globe that a
wilt had been issued for $10,000
damages, but that the suit would. not
be pushed if the Globe would remib
$500 by'Mr. Murray's lawyer. The
Globe published a second apology in
its still words, but declined to pay the
$500 ; the 'mit followed, with the re-
sult mentioned above. •
