About thirty-five hands are now
employed in the Alymer Canning
Factory, canning poultry, beef, bone-
less Piga' feet, chicken soups, mince
meats, cranberries, etc. The output
in fowl this year will be about 50,000
cans, while upwards of 20,000 cans
of beef will bo turned out. In all
probability the factory will close for
the season on the first of January.

arbitrators have been appointed to
determine a valuation. The Messrs,
Hay, of Woodstock, having become
the owners of the work, they have ap-
pointed Wallace Nesbitt, of Toronto,
as their arbitrator, and Mr, Morrison,
of Woodstook, has been appointed by
the corporation of that town, These
two have appointed Judge Sinclair as
the third arbitrator, in pursuance of
the contract. The amount involved
is about $26,000,

It is a practice of Montreal roughs

The appointment of Capt. H. Street -
field, A.D.U., to the Governor-Gener-
al, to the position of Military Secret-

oant by the resignation of Visoount
Melgund, to gazetted. Capt. Street -
field will be succeeded by an officer of
the English Guards.
Governor Smith, of Vermont, Pres-
ident of the Central Vermont Rail-
way, was in Ottawa last week. He
denied the rumor afloat to the effect
that the Canada Pacific was about
to obtain control of the Canada At•
lantio Railway. His visit to Ottawa
WAS in connection with the yearly
settlement of affairs with the Canada
Atlantic.
The great lakes are still open to
commerce, as the winter thus far hag
been quite mild. The Lehigh Val-
ley lino have just sent ten cargoes of
coal by way of the lakes to Chicago.
Two propellers passed the straits
Friday night and will reach Chicago
in safety. Such late navigation has
never before been attempted.
Reports having been circulated
about the Indians of the Northwest in
and around the Fort McLeod reserve
being in a restless condition, the de-
partment of the Mounted Police re•
quests the publication of the following
telegram from Col. A. G. Irvine, Com-
missioner of Mounted Police, dated
Fort McLeod, Dec. 2Gth :—"Every-
thing satisfactory in thio district."
