miry,
YliOMOTE ll,
A little form stood by my side,
The sear look I noted
"0 leacher, when vetoatlon's o'er,
'lay, shall 1 lw promoted ?"
"Noy little one, you have been ill,
Cts tasks would be severe,"
'Phot! coaxingly, "Would you not like
To tarry longer here ?"
"It is not yen I wish to leave,
You're always good and kind,
But when my mates aro going on
"Tis hard to stay behind,"
Tho blue eyes filled with sudden tears,
I stroked the wringlets shining,
But well I know the tired feet
R
ould stumble in the climbing.
The weeks flew by, end moo again,
in their accustomed places,
I saw the children of my obarge,
With welcome in their faces.
I3nt one I missed ; no earthly cars
May bo to the devoted ;
Thy wish ie grouted, happy child,
And thou haat been promoted.
O sad, reproaohful ayes of blue,
O tears, that dimmed their shining !
O tiny feet, that struggled on,
Nor faltered in the climbing !
But One, the Teacher great and wise
Math rightly ganged thy powers.

Through grace, at last he ours,

United States Consul Newcomb, at
Lyons, has sent to the Secretary of

ing extensively used in France with
favorable results.
The Planters' Journal says the
mulberry is a good tree to raise in a
poultry yard. It is hardy and long.
lived, and the fruit ie popular with
the hens, besides being very nioe for
children. The leaves are largo and
the shade it makes is dense, which
ii desirable also in summer.
Dead leaves are rolling down pret-
ty thickly about this time, and if you
have any place to put them, you will

for use in the poultry.houee. If there
is anything that makes a.hen happy
in winter it is the privilege of scratch-
ing ber corn out from among a lot of
dry leaves. Hens having plenty of
sclalcbing seldom acquire habits of
feather eating, egg eating and other
vices.
The buttering and "oleo" manu-
facturers of Chicago recently made a
great point by securing a large spade
for their products at the exhibition to
be held under the auspices of the Il-
linois State Board of Agriculture
which action is denounced in most
vigorous terms by the National Live
Journal and other papers. One of
the butterine men, Mr. Armour, de-
fends himself by stating that he sup-
plied oleo product to 38 creamery or
dairy men. The names of those per-
sons ho declined to give, nor would
be state their location.
It is generally believed that coal
ashes poseess little or no value for any
agricultural purpose. and yet this
hardly the case. Even if they in
themselves possessed no fertilizing
properties, they still have a value as
an absorbent for some purposes,
They are excellent for earth closets,
to which use they can be turned,
But tatting into account the instances
where vegetable subetsncoe find their
way into the coal lire, and the small
amount of potash that they may oon-
tain, it is best for those farmers who
indulgo in the use of coal for heat.

utilize it either as a deodorizer or

the amount may turnout to be far

of the books is made. Mr. Campbell
is in debt for borrowed money to a

twenty-four numbers as delivered at
fifty cents a number, in all twelve
dollars, and gave an order for that
number, but it does not appear wheth-
er the printed order, which was not
produced, contained those variations.
A few days ago the delivering agent,

full set . of books, Mr, Lockwood
took the order, saying he would get
the money, which he did, but the
