Brussels Salt Works AT a meeting of the Directors of the Maitland Skating and Curling rink last Monday, the charter having arrived, R. Graham was elected Pres]. dent, and E. B, Burt, Sec.-Treae. The Board of Directors are the above mentioned gentlemen and E. E. Wade, `F. S. Scott and hs. Drewe. It was resolved to ask for tenders for level- ling the ground in the rink, sinking a well and building the waiting rooms, gallery, he. The tickets, 60 in a book, will cost $8.00 and all tickets bought before the rink °pone will en- title the purchaser to free admittance every afternoon. CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAT.—The last steamer of the Canadian Pacific Steamship Lino left Owen Sound for Port Arthur, on the 17th Nov., for the final trip of the season. Gilpin in con - conical with his witneesing a wall, several years ago, of one Samuel Mc- Donald, of Blanshard township, Perth Co. The will was never regis- tered, having fallen into the hands of the notorious 0. S. Jones, of St. Marys, and the people interested are trying to establish the contents of the missing document before the Obancery Court, at Chatham, Dr. Woodgate was the other witness of the will, but he is away en Australia. Mr. Gilpin was unable to go to Chatham on ac- count of a sore hand, hence the visit of the legal gentlemen. Mr. White is the Provincial Grand Master of+tile Orange institution of this province, and was made quite at home with the leading lights of the Order here. AEI. THANKSGIVING TEA.—On Thursday evening, despite the unfavorable weather, the Thanksgiving tea -meet- ing held in the Methodist church, was largely attended. An excellent sup. per was spread in the basement, to which ample justice was done. The musieal and literary part of the pro• gram was given in the audience room. The program consisted of two Thanks- giving anthems from the ellen ; read- ing, "Beadiug the stations," G. L. Ball; recitation, 'Prayer and potatoes,' by Millie Smyth ; reading, "Brother Beecher's sermon," Rev. Mr. Smyth ; address by Rev. J. Roes, B.A. A club of twelve girls sang "Fret not thyself," and "Pining for the old fire- side." The cantata "The wise and foolish virgins," was well given by Misses Gerry, H. Ball, Beer, A. Smith and Buyers, who took the part of the wise virgins and were robed in white, withlamps burning, and Misses Town, Howe, L. Bradwell, 13. Bali and M. Kerr, representing the foolish virgins and were dressed in black and had unlighted lamps. A quartette "Only a dream of home," was given by the Misses Kerr and 0. B. Harris and W. H. Kerr, Everybody was well pleased with the entertainment and each performer did their part in a most satisfactory manner. Rev. J. L. Kerr occupied the chair. Oysters were served at the close. THE general topic of conversation on Monday was the execution of Riel, at Regina. The newe was received by telegram. ASCENT's mill has shut down for the present. The cooper shop is in full blast, however. A large amount of work has been turned out this year, but sales have been a little dull, GEORGE I'IOGGARTH has bid farewell to Brussels and has taken a position tot Lueknow station. SOME of the people are wondering if the Directors of the new rink are going to allow the contractor to fin- ish the job without putting the bets in line ? We suppose the work is being looked after and will no doubt have to be cone, according to con- tract or some one will lose by it. ABOUT KEEPING BUTTER.—S01118- thing UTTER:Some- thing liko a concerted arrangement has been entered into by shopkeepers in quite a number of towns and vill- ages in Ontario, not to take butter on account after November Ist each year, but only to take it for goods sold over the counter at the time of delivering the butter. The reason of this resolve is that the butter makers in Ontario have long shown a disposition to hold their butter in crooks or tubs in their cellars until far into the fall, when it has lost its flavor, and it as besides too late in the season to be shipped to the old country markets. Goon ENOUGH.—H. Dennis, who is an enthusiastic cricketer, has promis- ed a bat for the best average score for next year, two thirds of the mat- ches to be played by competitors. Any person who has won a bat in past seasons will be barred, thus giving new men an opportunity of proving their superiority as batsmen. THE Brussels band are talking of a good concert and gift enterprise to take place about the middle of next month in the Town Hall. Watch out for posters containing full par- ticulars. The object of the enter- tainment is to raise funds to procure mora new inettuments for the band, the instruments to become the prop- erty of the corporation. GOOD allow. -.—The firm of Scott & Williams have turned out some dandy Portland cutters this fall. The trim. ming was done by D. Frain and the painting, which is excellent, by 'Billy' Smith. The fire alarm was rung and the engine and carts were soon taken over. The fire had caught near the chimney and was burning under the roof but a holo was out in the roof and a line of hose was directed to where the fire was and the devouring element was soon drowned out. The house was damaged a gooddeal however between fire and water. The loss is covered by lusuranne. THANKSGIVaNG Day was duly observ- ed by a large number of our villagers and church going people in the surrounding country in attendance at divine service in their respective ohurehes. Rev. Mr. Ross dwelt upon the iat and 2nd verses of the 108 Psalm, at Melville church, At the Methodist church Rev, Mr. Smyth took the words "What mean ye by this service' as the subject of his remarks. Rev. W. T, Oluff preached an appropriate discourse in. S1. John's church. 0n10RET SUPPER. --Last Monday ev ening the affairs of the Brussels crick. et club were wound up for this year. The financial standing of the club is very satisfactory. For the next year the membership fee will be placed at 50 cents for honorary members and $1.00 for active members. White euibs will also be procured. After the business was concluded the company repaired to the spacious dining hall of the Queen's hotel, where 27 persons partook of the excellent spread, got up in a splendid style. The sapper over, E. E. Wade, President of the Club, took theiobair, and was ably seconded by Jno. Hargreaves, Sec.- Treas. The following toasts were drank :—"The Queen" ; "The Brus- sels Cricket Club" ; song, "Hearts of pall," Jno. Hargreaves ; "The learned profession," elicited spseehes from Rev. W. T. Oluff, G. Elliot, W. M. Sinclair, G. E. Cooper and W. H. McDonald; comic song, Semen Laid; "Tho Manufacturing interests," was responded to by J. D. Roniely, W. F. Vanstone, J. Kitchen, H. Dennis and A. Webster; song, "I'm an English- man," Thos. Town ; "The Mercantile interests," were coupled with the names of Jae. Drewe, A. Good and J. and D. Boss ; Songs were sung by A. Strachan and Geo. Thomson; "The Press," was responded to by W. H. Kerr ; songs by Capt. Stratton, W. 313. Stoolair, and J. Kitchen ; the toast to ,,The Ladies," was proposed, and 0. Waterer, J. M. McIntosh, 3, Hyslop, E. B. Burt, A. Currie and A. M. Kay were called upon to re- spond ; "The Host and Hostess" brought the evening's entertainment to a close. A pleasing and noticeable feature was the total absence of all kinds of liquor, the toasts being thank in water. The Brussels cricket club have a good standing and are backed up by the town, A good Season is anticipated next year. There were 69 members on the roll this year.
