trate was an elderly man bound for
Suspension Bridge. On the same
train were a couple of elegant gentle-

wad of money about him. A third
elegant gentleman, a companion of
tho others, was also on the train, but
did not attempt to maks friends with
the old patty who had been spotted
as a victim by the clever trio. The
victim bad several parcels with him,
and his two kind friends busied them-
selves in assisting to get them safely
on the train for the bridge. This
caused oonsiderable delay, and the
old gentleman was hardly on the
platform of his oar before the train
started. Ha two kind friends were

Tan Rime -The eontraot for the
rink, spoken of last week, fell throngh.
New tenders wore asked for a circul-
ar roofed rink, 580.60 feet. P.
Thompson offered to ereot one, on
Elizabeth street, and give deed of
land for $1,950. Wm. Vanstone &
Sons offered to build a rink on David
Wogs' lot, opposite Town Hall, and
cover it with painted iron for $2,400
or build a frame rink, eame design as
Seaforth roller rink only 10 feet long-
er for $2,000. The latter proposition
was accepted and the building is to
be completed in 6 weeks. The com-
pany have $500 in shares of $25
each, payable in 20 per cent calla,
not lese than one mouth intervening,
to make up the necessary amount.
This will afford people who have not
taken stock in the Co. to do so. The
charter is expected here this week
and before long bhe work will be
rushing along.

ment iu Dakota has been a marvel of activ-
ity and enterprise. In 1880 the population
was 185,177. The present territorial oen-
sue makes it 415,064, of which there is in
Southern Dakota 252,515, and 153,140 in
Northern Dakota. Number of farms in 1880
was 17,435. They are now reported at 82,-
467, of which 44,656 are in the Southern
section and 87,811 in the Northern section.
So eager has been the quest for free farms
in this oaaily cultivated and fertile region,
that the territory outranks 17 of Ibe 38
states in the number of existing farms, It
will be a enrprise to many that the number
of farms in Dakota in 1885 ie greater than
was the number in Newbraeka iH 1880. It
exseods the number in Maine ; and,, of
course, that of every other New England
state. It surpasses the aggregate of Cali-
fornia at the date, and of Maryland and of
Delaware. It is greater than the combined
number of Maesaebusetts, Rhode -Island
and Connecticut, and mots than all the
farms of Oregon, Nevada and Colorado in
the West, and Rhode Island, Delaware and
Florida in the Feet, the eix etatee taken to-
gether 1 nor are tbeae'farms all skeleton
homesteads. There are five times as many
people in the territory as 'there .are fame,
and produotion looms grandly. In the esti.
