REV. W. HENDERSON, of Wyoming,
was here according to announcement,
and delivered a lecture on A. night
of travel in the Holy Land" in the
Town Hall, on Thursday evening of
this week.

Wei. HUNTER was sentenced to 2
years imprisonment, on Thursday of
this week, by Judge Armour, for at-
tempted rape on the person of Miss
Bates. Herbert and Souls, who
were arrested at the same time as
Hunter, were acquitted. Hunter
has already put in about a year and
a half and a good many think the
sentence severe.

and $500 fine may be imposed upon
any person who issues, sells or trans-
fers any instrument, promissory note,
or bill of exchange, not having the
words, ''Given for a patent right,''
printed or written across its face.

THROUGH the kindness of a friend
we received a Dopy of the truant Lis-
towel Banner. The editor 15 sick
over the game of cricket with Brussels
and they "lost" the score book, so
the score could not appear, but the
following item gives the facts of the
case only we will ask our read-
ers to substitute "the" for "an" in
the drat lino: -Oa Saturday last, an
eleven went to Brussels to have a
game with the club of that place, and
wind up cricket playing for the sea-
son, The scoring was remarkably
small on both sides, but that of the
visitors so much smaller that they
were defeated with five wiokets to
spare.
THE Wingham Times tells how they
treat nuieanees in that town :-On
Monday A. Roe of the Queen's hotel,
was charged before Mayor Neelands
with maintaining a nuisance within
the moaning of the by-law passed last
spring which provides that . all hog
pens muet be cleaned out and disin•
!Meted every day. He was found
guilty and sentenced to Joey a fine of
$5 and costs -making in all ?8,10.
Now that a start has been made to
carry out the provisions of the by-law
it is hoped that the good work will be
kept up until the town is clear of
these Miley and loud•smelling pens.
There's lots of them around and it
don't require much hunting to find
them. The able•bodiod smell aris-
ing from them gives them dead away,
Brussels property, so we will see him
once a year, at least.
H. DENNIS captured the lab prize
for single harness at the Wroxoter
Show last week. He make s a good
sot of harness and his work can be
relied on.

DIED. -Last Saturday night Mrs.
Edward Varooe died, after an illness
of several weeks. She had been
troubled with heart disease some time
and her death was not unexpected.
The funeral took place on Monday af-
ternoon, Rev. Wm. Smyth officiating.
A husband and eight children mourn
the lose of the departed.
WHAT about the reorganization of
the. Brussels football club ? No small
amount of skill was exhibited at the
game last season by our local kiok-
ere and the boys should be getting in•
to shape for rho coming campaign.
Other towns are organizing and Brus-
sels wants to keep up her end of the
stick.
NEXT Monday evening a meeting
of all interested in the skating and
curling rink will be held in the Town
Hall. E. B. Burt, who has been
pushing the project, informs ns that
the amount of money required is near-
ly all subscribed. Two or three sites
are spoken of and the matter will
probably bo decided next Monday
evening,
TOBOGGANING. -It seems it little
early In the season to trot out that
long word but Ged. E. Cooper is al-
ready malting arrangements for ma-
terial for a lot of now toboggans and
the elide will be put in good shape.
A longer run will be arranged and
steps will obviate the difficulty of
coming up the slide. A good winter's
sport ie counted on. Me. Cooper says
the new toboggans will be good ones.
AN exchange says: -Look out for
patent right "hay fork" and "wash•
mg machine" men. They have been
working hard in this County for the
past two weeks, and have succeeded
in victimizing some unsuspecting far-
mers. For any sake stick to your
fame, and don't imagine you are go-
ing to make your fortune by purehas-
mg patent rights. This item is pub,
hailed for the benefit of persons who
are liable to allow themselves to be
approached by strangers and talked
out of their money by glib•tongued
agents of worthless patent rights in
which they say "there are mil•
lions in it."

THE Winnipeg Free Press says: -
In the horse ring the prize animals
were holding a little show of their
own. Among the foremost in pro-
cession was observed the handsome
two•year-old Clydesdale stallion be-
longing to J. E. Smith, the enter-
prising stock raiser of Beresford,south
of Brandon. He os the got of old
Lord Haddow, a horse with a provin-
cial reputation, This colt has taken
numerous first prizes at the Toronto
lnduetrial Fair and others through-
out western Ontario. both as a year-
ling and a two-year-old. He was
awarded first, and ie a valuable ac-
quisition to the horse stock of that
notion of country.

Quart are reported to be unusually
searoe this season, in fact soaroely a
single bird is to bo found and it is
thought they must have perished dur-
ing the cold of last winter. Some
good bags of partridge and woodcock
have been made of late, but the boys
favorite game -the black squirrel -ie
said bo be almost entirely gone from
the woods.
TEMPERANCE MEETING. -Th a mon-
thly temperance meeting was held in
the Methodisb church last Tuesday
evening. Although the night was
dark and the weather threatening
there was a good turnout: Rev. Mr.
Smyth oocupied the chair and the
meeting was opened with singing, and
prayer by Rev. S. Jones. After a
short speech by the chairman a tem-
perance song was given by Mies Kerr,
Cl. B. Harris and W. H. Kerr, W.
Hartry followed with a good reading,
entitled "The dignity of labor:" 0.
R. Oo opor and hie two daughters
sang, then Rev. J. Ross delivered
one of his characteristic addresses.
He gave three reasons why we were
right in working for prohibition, as
follows :-1st. Patriotism ; 2nd. Our
duty to our fellow men, and 3rd From
religious motives. D. Stewart and
daughter sang "Don't drink to•day
my boy," after which a statement of
the financial affairs was made and a
collection and subscription amounting
to over $13 was taken. Rev. Mr.
Cluff and G. L. Ball were called up-
on for an address and reading, re-
spectively, but neither of them were
present. This interesting meeting
was brought to a close by the bene•
diction.
NORTH HURON TEACHERS' AssooIA-
Tros.-The regular semi-annual meet-
ing of the North Huron Teachers'
Association will be held in the Central
School, Wingham, on Thursday and
Friday, Oct. 22nd and 23rd, 1885.
On the evening of Thursday, an en-
tertainment will be given in the Town
Hall by the best looal talent. On the
afternoon of Thursday or forenoon of
Friday, Dr. Towler, Wingham, will
favor the Association with an address
on "Hygiene," and Bev. R. Mo0osh
will also deliver a abort address on
matters of interest. The following is
the programme :-President's addrees,
Mr. Malloch ; Delegate's report -Mr.
Linklater; Grammar papers, second
and third class, 1885, Mr. Turnbull ;
Some theories ill physics, Mr. Robb ;
Essay on music, Mies Reynolds ; Es-

and things," Mr. Groves ; Love of
school, Mr. Stewart ; Arithmetic -aim
and connection in teaching, Mr.
Lough.
SIR BionARD CAnTwRIGHT.-Despite
the darkness and muddy roads the
Town Hall was filled last Wednesday
evening to listen to an address from
Sir Rich. J. Cartwright. E. E. Wade
President of the East Huron Reform
Assooiation, filled the chair. Oeou•
pying eeats on the platform were T.
Gibson, M. P. P., of East Huron, Dr.
Sloan, of Blyth, Jno. NlcOrae, Theo.
Strachan, P. Thomson, J. R. Smlth
and others. For about Iwo hours
Sir Richard dilated upon the leading
political questions, a large portion of
the time being given to the gerryman-
dering .13111 and the Franchise Bill.
He was applauded again and again
and he concluded his very interesting
address amidst rounds of applause.
Ile is ail excellent speaker and has
such xis easy flow of language that it
is a pleasure to hear liilu. A few
words were spoken by Mr. Gibson and
.Dr. Sloan before the meeting broke up.

for the Queen, Sir Richard and Thos.
