The work of surveying the new cemetery at St. Marys was begunlast week. `!'hero are now 190 pupils in attend• :moo at tho Collegiate Institute Strat ford, Stratford wants a street railway.— Herald. So does a goose peed side pockets. Miss Lena Ford, of St. Marys, has IT is reported that Judge Toms,• trill, iu ail probability, be appointed Revising Barrister for Huron County, under the new, Dominion, Franchise Bill. 'While there are many things in this law that we do not agree with, we feel satisfied that if the above mentioned appointment is confirmed it will bo highly satisfactory to the majority of the electors in Huron. Judge Toms, by his straightforward course while on the bench, has won the highest reeve from all and his decisions are given in a way that does credit to the bench and gives The telephone poles between Lieto- Justice her proper place. We hope i wol and Stratford aro nearly all up this appointment will bo made. \Vi have frequently urged - upon Reformers in the polling dietricts the necessity of meeting without delay to prepare the het of voters. They aro to bear in mind that the assessment is no longer a guide, The qualifica- tions of owners and occupants are in cities $800, in towns, $200, and in rural districts $150. The qualifica- tion required is that the voter shall pay a rental of the value of $2 a month. $6 a quarter, $12 the half, year, or $20 for the year, and to have been a resident of the division for two years, and shall have paid rent before the final revision of the list. Anyone having an income of $800 per year shall be entitled to a vote, and a wage•earner to this a- mount is also a voter. Tho facts should be ascertained and the lists prepared aceordingly. beep appointed aesistaut organist in St. Peters, London. There wore 20 from the St. Marys Coll. Inst. last year attending the Toronto University. The compositors in the Stratford herald dies struok the other day and delayed the lssuenCo of the pap- er. The Stratford Tilnos says that Judea Lazars ie to be made Revising Barrister for the North Riding of Perth. The Stratford and Seaforth Poultry Associations will hold a union exhib- ition in Stratford the third week in January, .A. Corsrr Convention of temper- ance workers will be held at Clinton, on Thursday of next week. Would it not he a good plan for the Executive Committee to meet early in the day and mark out the platform for the whole day ? There is a lack of sye- tem often et these large gatherings and a few men often take up a great deal of time in useless discussion. There is a lot of work to be done and we trust this part of the County will be well represented and that the de- liberations of the day will be pro- ductive of good. The Scott Act is all right, it is the violation of it that makes tho trouble. Men whose word is as good as their bond on any other question will go into the witness box on a whiskey case and deliberately perjure themselves. This is true and shows one of the difficulties to bo surmounted in enforcing the law. THE political fever is running high in England just now and even the preachers pro waxing eloquent and stealing out denunciations from the pulpit according to the dictates of their conscience. We notice in the Presbyterian Review that Dr. Harvey Godwin, Bishop of Carlisle, has re. proved Rev. Mr. Kennedy, one of his clergyman, for making use of the following, regarding the oomiug elec. tions. Speaking to his parishioners he said :— "Be not befooled, sons of toil, do not in politics trust a Tory. No, not if he came to on in an archangel's garb, and on bend- ed knee before God's high altar, swore by the sign of man's redemption that he only meant yell well. If you have any cause to fear him, deceive the deceiver—I advise you, in plain terms, of the two evils choose the least. If ho must have an answer, tell you master a lie with your tongue in pref. erence to marking with your pencil a ter• rible lie against yourself, your family, your elaas, your country, and your Clod." This is carrying politics too far when persona will lose eight of integ• rity and for the sake of party, per. ehanco, violate five out of the ten commandments. No country, not even Euglaud, will prosper as 11 should 00 long as party is before the good of the country and the ambition meetings. The Aldermen claim that and the connections will be made in a few week's time. Alexander Hamilton, eon of Rev. R. Hamilton, was ordained to the sacred work of the ministry in his Gather's church at bfotbewoll on Tues. day of last week. The Rev. Dr. Wild of Toronto will deliver a lecture in Stratford, October 19th under the auspices of the Con. grogatioual Church, subject, "Mon with iron shoes." On Sunday afternoon of last week, Bishop Baldwin consecrated that part of Avondale cemetery used for the interment of members of the Episco• pal church at Stratford. A man representing himself as a Chicago detective, was in Stratford on Wednesday in search of a Buffalo crook who skipped across the linos with $15,000. He did not find him and left for Toronto. Tobias Nash, of McKillop, lifted 1020 lbs, on a common scale in Mit- chell on Tuesday. It was thought that no one could beat this, but a young man from Logan named Wood, went to work and lifted 10 lbs. more. A number of young ladies at St. Marys have formed themselves into a Driving Aseooiatiou for the purpose of driving around the town and ser- enading such young mon as may be unfortunate enough to be out with• out a protector. The fine weather of the past two weeke has been taken advantage of by many in Logan township to lift their potatoes, Every one reports the rot to a greater or less extent. In some cases nine -tenths of the crop is gone, in other oases only about ono.tenth. Dr. W. N, Robertson, a Perth boy, has returned from a course of study in Scotland, having obtained diplomas from the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal Oollege of Surgeons and the Royal Maternity in Midwifery in Edinburgh, and also from the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, Glas• gow. Last spring Geo. Welsh, of the 8th concession of Maryborough, planted a potato he had received from Mani- toba. The potato weighed only half a pound. The other day he dug the product, and found that he had just 52 potatoes. One weighed 2 pounds, throe 4 pounds, and the whole lot 25 pounds. bur. Welsh will plant the 25 pounds next seaeon. On the 24th of May, 1866, the Queen's Own of Toronto were station oil at Stratford, the Fenian scare being then at its height. The officers and mon were billeted among the citizens, and as might be expected many friendships were formed. It is now proposed that the twentieth an- niversary of that event, which will be on the Queen's birthday of next year, should be appropriately celebrated. As John Knox's hired boy and his own little boy, about nine years old, of North Easthope, were leading a cow along the road last Friday, the little fellow tied the rope around his waist and his companion striking the cow with a whip caused her to make a jump. She jerked the bey off his feet and ran away, pulling him along the hard road for a quarter of a mile. Only for some girls by good luck stoppiug the cow, the little fellow would very soon have been killed; the girls, in fact, thought he was dead. He is sorely hurt, but it is thought will recover. Stratford is somewhat excited over the questionable actions of the City Council moving a resolution to expel tho (lditor of the Herald from their TIIE Z.411.'SSEi.S POST, Ove. 9, 1R9(. the scone 1110 Herald describes as taking place in the Clerk's Moe never occurred, The Herald claims it did and sticks to It. Besides, that journal states in an apology, which was considerably worse then the original sip of which the editor 15 ac,- wised, that these worthy Aldermen couduoted themselves worse then they were described. It was thought at ons time that a free fight amongst some of the zoploue Aldermen was inevitable, Loud and boisterous fan. guago and fist shaking was indulged in, but that was all it amounted to. Then take the all night racket they had not long ago, over the bridge matter again. Tbo Times gave them a terrible setting out, but he was not expelled. But probably this eau be accounted for, as the Times man has a seat at the Board. A program of the 12th annual Proviacial Convention of the Sabbath School Association of Oanada,to be hold in Stratford on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of October, has been re• ceived. The program is a most inter• esting one, the Executive Committee apparently having left nothing undone calculated to mance the session one of great helpfulness to all, concerned. Delegates upon arriving at Stratford should proceed immediately to the place of meeting, Knox Ohurch, where the Reception Committee will furnish them billete. Arrangements have been made with railway author- ities for the return journey at ono faro aid a third. Certificates for this purpose will be furnished On re- ceipt of the filled up blank Corm fut•n- iehed. Judging from the flames of distinguished Sabbath School work- ers on the program, and that of Wm. Reynolds, of Peoria, Illinois, togeth. er with the Whyte Brothers, who will conduct the music, the seesion will be one of the most interesting yet held. Institute exercises will be led by the Rev. Alfred Andrews, S. S. Secretary of the Guelph Conference. Kieron County lbs oxen.. The Hensall Presbyterians are go- ing to build an $8,000 brick church. The Huron Fall Assizes will be opened a; Godorich on the 18th of October. Wm. Mitchell, lately of the Balk - will House, London, has leased the Exeter Roller Rink. The Dominion Express Company has opened an office in Stratford, with C. E. Williams as agent. The gate receipts at the South Huron fair amounted to over $800, oxclueive of membership tickets. Freight is so heavy on the L., H. & B. line just now that special freight trains aro sent out every day or se. There is considerable 'fault being found with the judging of both the in- side and outside deportmente at the South Huron fall show. The Hensall Skating Rink, which collapsed from weight of snow on the roof last spring, has been rebuilt on an enlarged and an improved plan. The apple harvest throughout the county of Huron is nearly gathered. The yield is good and the quality fine. Nearly all the fruit was sent to the Northwest. The convictions by magistrates of this county for the quarter ending September 8, numbered 78. Of these, 15 were by Godorich magistrates, 24 by Seaforth, 9 by Exeter, 9 by Brus- sels, and the rest by sundry magis- trates. Geo. Hughes has won the Meyers gold medal for the lightweight championship of the Winghom quoit ciab. His opponent was James Mo - Alpine, and the game resulted thus: —Hughes, 81 ; McAlpine, 26. James White, of Hay, the web - known horse buyer, sold two span of Horses, to an American buyer, for which he received the handsome sum of $950, One of the teams alluded to carried off the second prize in the agricultural Dines at the London Ex- hibition, and was sold for $500.
