At homo, as abroad, what we
should specially cultivate is manners.
Elaborate monograms and Borg•

A gentleman will raver admit that
he has maladies—in conversation.
Observe in making au introduction
always to present the gentleman to
the lady.
A polished wan puts his neighbor
at ease, and by so doing confirms his

Half the failures in life are caused

rankles in the mind long after an UI1•

There is nothing so contemptible
as that which animates the poral

Truth is the best policy. Every
person feels flattered by the reflec-

In these words iscomprehended the
whole code of courtesy : Put overy

and put yourself into everybody's
place.
Good humoured gossip is tho salt
of ordinary conversation, but no well
bred peveon will indulge in the gos•

domestic life and either invonts or
misrepresents.

"Wonderful power of manners 1
We may ascribe to them as great a
potency as beauty possesses. No
doubt they go far to supply the want
of beauty and constitute the secret of
that fascination which we 50 often see
oserted by persons who cannot claim
to bo beautiful,"
Whilo guests are with yon do your
beat to make them feel that they are
thoroughly welcome, and give up to
them ell your thoughts and attention.
Do this not so much out of respect to
them as to yourself. No one benefits
morn by an act of conrtosy than the
person who performs it.
It was said of Lady Maynard: "to

,t1(31DEicoN FARRAR.
A-SEETOII Or BIN LIPS AND WORK,
.'roderic William _Farrar, who is
now in this country was born in Bom-
bay In 1881, where his father, the
Rev. 0. R. Farrar, held the position
of chaplain of the fort. Frederic
Farrar received his early education
at King William's College, in the
Isle of Man, then entered King's Col-
lege, London, and after graduated at
the London University, and was ap-
pointed University Scholar in 1852.
Entering Trinity College, Cambridge,
he took his bachelor's degree with
high classical honors, in 1854. He
was successfully assistant master of
Marlborough College and Harrow
School, was elected to a Triuity Fel-
lowship in 1854, and received priest's
orders in 1887. front 1871 to 1876
he filled the position Of head master
of Marlborough College, where he ex-
hibited that sympathetic intuition of
the schoolboy's inner life, "Eric" "St.
Wtnnifred," "Julian Home," though
never so popular as "Tom Brown's
School Days," did much to dispel the
popular delusions about the public
school life in England. Dr. Farrar's
fame as an author principally ratite,
however, on his later theological
works among which the "Life of
Christ," published in 1874, stands
prominently forward, through his
"Life and Works of St. Paul," pub-
lished in 1870, shows no diminution
in vigor end style and picturesqueness
of description. In 1876 he was ap-
pointed Ono of the oanona of Weet-
minister Abbey and rector of the ane•
ieut Church of St, -Margaret's, which
stands under the shadow of the Ab-
bey, In 1884 Canon I!'arrar became
Archdeacon of \Yestminletor and re-
signed the rectorship of St. Mar'-
garet's. It was from the pulpit of
the Abbey that on July 4th, 1879, he
admitted the folly of the course
which alienated rho American colon
los from the mother country, and at
the same time recognized tho bless-
ings to civilization and progrose, of
both sides of the Atlantic, which had
followed that disruption. As a preach-
er Archdoacon Farrar enjoys a rep
utation not inferior to that which he
acquired as an author, and Wast.
minister Abbey is orowdod to its ut-
most capacity whenovsr ho occupies

The fall meeting of the Ontario
Fruit Growers' Association, which
game to a close at Wingham on Wed-
nesday evening, Sept. 16th, brings
fresh to mind the extent and import -
arm of the fruit growing industry in
Canada. It s°oms from the reports
issued by the Department of Agricul-
ture that the exportation of green
fruits to England represents a com-
paratively largo item in the trsdo of
the nation. The aggregate varies
with the character of the season, but
during the past three years it has
averaged a quarter of a million dol-
lars. Apples are tho chief class sent
across the Atlantic, aud they are
growing in the estimation of foreign
consumers, because of their superior
flavor aud keeping qualities. With
the dissemination of such useful
knowhedgo as the Fruit Growers' As-
sociation seeks to impart through its
triennial meeting in various sections
of the Province, it is only reasonable
to expect a rapid development of tho
exportation trade and a growing im-
provement in the class of fruit ship -
pod away. The facilities for carrying
coupled with the knowledge that has
been gained through exporieuco ns to
the best means of packing and the
varieties that are most readily pur-
chased, will inevitably bring about
ibis rssult. It has boon discovered,
in connection with this trach(, that it
pays to put up the pacicagos in at-
tractive style, and adorn them with
suitable labels, setting for the name
of the variety and the locality it has
come from. No stronger proof could
bo had of the euperiorty of Cauadian
apples in the Old. World, than the
feet that American shippers havo
branded their paokages as cooling
from tbie country, and enjoyed the
advantages which came from the
preferences of English buyers. Iu
connection with this subject it is alae
gratifying to know that moat active
