Co. Young Hawke was looking after
his stock farm a few miles from Prico-
ville and was returning through a bush
about half a mile wide, to his brother-
in-law's, Air. Harrow, with whom he
boards. Ho had delayed starting for
home and it was a little after Clark
when ho entered the bush. Fortun-
ately for himself he had lois rifle along,
for he had only gone a short distance,
when a large she bear with her three
cubs stood up before him, and before
ho had time to fire or retreat, Mrs.
Bruin had him in her embrace. Find.
lug that the squeezing was altogether
beyond the hug his lady love had given
him, when ho took his departure from
her the evening before, he used his
beat endeavors to free himself, which
ho did after considerable difficulty.
Seizing has rifle, ho fired the contents
at the bear and wounded her, then
she and two of tho cubs took to a tree.
With a second shot he killed one of
cube. Finding that his ammunition
was about gouo, he went to lfr, har-
row's for assistance, and that gentle-
man and he returned, fully armed, to
the scone of the conflict. They built
a fire and found ono of tho cube still
up the tree. This one they shot, the
old bear and the other cub having loft.
The two killed weighed about one
hundred pounds each. Hawke says
it was the closest call he ever had, and
that ho is euro it stopped him of a
year's growth. Ho has a lame back
from the tight squeezing, but is not
otherwise Mitred.
