Ax inch space in the newspaper is
worth a thoueuncl miles of advertising
on a board fence. It is correct for
the farmers these cold flays to gather
around the warm fires and read every-
thing in a newspaper, and if there
were signs as large as a barn door
right in the midclle of the road which
they travelled home, they would go
around them and never give them a
parting glance.

choir and several persons belonging to
the congregation assembled at the
residence of Jno. Grower for the pur-
pose of attesting their recognition of
Miss Grewar's services as organist for
the past year and a halt'. The pros•
cut consisted of a purse containing
$25 and was presented by the Mom -
bent, Rev, W. T. Cluii, in a kindly
epoch of a few minutes. Hiss Grew-
ar thanked the donors in a very ap-
propriate manner. After refreshments
had been dispensed the evening was
spent in singing, social chat, &0.
A CERTAIN young man belonging to
Brussels had been in the habit of
:pending his evenings at a pertain
house where there were several young
ladies and often he kept (ate hours.
For a joke on him tbo girls wound up
an alarm clock, set it for 10 o'clock
and put it tender the sofa. The clock
Ohl its part and startled a couple of
otlior young gonte who were in the
room but did not "fizz" on the person
fur whom it was intended.
ST. VALENTINE'S DAY.—St, Valen-

used to create quite a ripple of exeit1•
went on its anniversary, passed al-
most unnoticed on Saturday in Brus-

tines is evidently fast, dying out.
This year there were very few new
designs offered for sale, It would be
almost safe to predict that in a few
years, when the present stocks have
been lulloaded, valentines will become

Tint Carleton Plaoe Herald says :—
"It win be remembered that h the latter
part of 1884 P. DL Campbell, as agent for
several fire in80rauce companies, transmitted
to the Underwriters' Association a detailed
statement of our means of proteotiou against
fire. The questions that were to be answered
wore published by the Harald at the time,
In rosponso to this, the Association gave
notice that the fire insurance oempanie8
would be warranted in issuing policies after
Jan. 1st,1885,at a reduction from the old
premiums. The rate upon first-class (store)
risks in Carleton Place heretofore was $1.26
upon $100, and by reduction it is now 00
cents ; on second class risks the rate was
$1.40 per 8100, and now it is 41.10. On
third and fourth class risks the reduction
prorate is not so great. Nattirally, where a
plaoe is able to Maintain such a good system
of fire protection as ours, the 10104800 men
01111 to encourage the erection of first-class
buildings by discriminating against the
wooden shells that are not only hazardous
risks in themselves, but tend to give the
whole village a lower rating. There are six
grades of cities, towns, villages, etc., and
Carleton Plano ranks in the fourth, oalled
grade "D." The reduction that has been
effected. by the purchase of theRonald engine
and by the present system of protection
against fire amounts to a great saving in the
premiums of some of oar policy holders, In
due time "bre limits"—a section in which
no more wooden buildings are to be built—
will doubtless be established,
