ed last Tuesday for South Ren-
frew, for the Local Legislature, by
over 1100 of a majority. Ilia op-

Tani Gerrie Enterprise, a Con-
servative paper, speaks right out
iu nteetin' as follows :—Tho 17x11
has come out squarely against the
Scott Act at last. Wonder how
many Conservatives it will convert
to "anti -ism ?" That journal has
yet to learn that it sloes not 11olcl
the entire Conservative party und-
er its editorial thumb.
Now that the various agricultur-
al societies are organized for the
coming year it would be well for
every farmer to invest a dollar in
the concern and help the institu-
tion along. It is of small conse-
quence to the person joining but
every member acids in increasing
the amount of grant drawn annu-
ally by these societies. Will you
become a member at once ?
LAST week the city of Guelph
set it good example to the other
cities of Ontario by carrying the
Scott Act by the handsome major-
ity of 169. The Royal city has
the honor of taking the lead as far
as the cities 1100 concealed and at
the snub time knocking the argu-
ment of the .Antis in the Head a-
bout the great injury to be done to
busbies by the passage of the
Scott Act.
A
GREAT deal of uneasiness has
been felt over the non -arrival of
news from General Stewart since
the battle last week. According
to the last news he was hemmed
in pretty well by the enemy and
although he had gained a brilliant
victory against great odds it was
feared the enemy might make an-
other attack. Sir Garnet Wolse-
ley has sent on detachments to as-
certain his position ancl aicl him if
he needs help. Tidings will be
eagerly awaited from the Soudan.
'PiII: official announcement has
been made that the Canada Tem-
perance Act will come into force
in Huron County at tho expiration
of the present license year. This
is as it should be as the majority
given 00 polling clay, 1659, was
certainly an out -spoken verdict of
what the electors thought of it. A.
fair and impartial trial should be
given for the term prescribed by
law, viz., 8 years, and if at the
expiration of the time it can bo re-
pealed if thought advisable.
Wo learn that Pat. Kelly, reeve
of Blyth, was chosen as Warden
of Huron Co. for 1.885. Thomas
Strachan, reeve of Grey, was also
a candidate and was defeated by 3
votes. Mr. Strachan would have
macre a tip-top Warden but his
time will come again. The idea of
a number of the County Council-
lors appears to bo to divide tho
honors as equally as possible be-
tween the two political parties,
and is A. I,, Gibson :tilled the
Warden's ell'air last year and was
la well-known Reformer Mr. Kelly
was the choice this year,
No ~conn, convenient or enjoyable
}dime of residplice for retired, or
retiring, farmers can be found than
Brussels an this fact has already,
been proven by the number of per -
.sous who Have made their glome
here. 'Village property is not dear;
all the privileges in tho lway of
school, churches, libraries, &c, aro
at baud ; fire protection is ample
and the conveniences for public
travel or the sending 01' receiving
of mail matter are fully up to the
share of other places. We welcome
our farmer friends to our village
and hope both they and us will bo
mutually benefitted,
Trina big carnival at Montreal is
in full blast this week and the city
is thronged with sight -seers. WIiat
good the carnival is going to ac-
complish has not, as yet, been de-
monstrated. The Montreal papers
say it advertises Canada and puts
it prominently before the Old
World especially. So it may, but
if it impresses them with the idea
of it being a land of snow, ice and
intense cold the opinion they form
will defeat the object of the Mo11-
trealers. Why not take half the
money and divide it Among the
poor of the city and present the
outer half to benevolent institu-
tions ?
Ir seems that fiends 111 human
'form are still to be found walking
our earth and hist weds the malic-
ious plot of blowing up the parlia-
ment buildings in London, Eng.,
with dynamite. Two explosions
took place shattering the beautiful
structure badly, knocking people
down, a number of whom were in-
jured and entailing a loss of over
$70,000. Several persons bave
been arrested and the detective
force is busy in tracking suspicious
ones. What was to be gained by
this terrible deed does not seem
plain but it appears a very foolish
and fiendisllplan of taking revenge.
It is said the plot was concocted
in Paris. The United States Con-
gress sent a very strong letter to
the British authorities condemn-
ing the black, dastardly trick. It
is thought othar public bulldiugs
would have suffered had not such
a vigorous precautionary effort
been made. Hanging is too mild
a punishment for such a crime.
Ir is a noticeable fact that so
many people aro deeply interested
in the transaction of parliamentary
affairs and long, dry speeches, de-
bates, &c., are gone through by
hundreds of the young men of
Canada with all amount of inter-
est -that would do credit to old par-
liamentarians. The outcome of
this will be that the young men of
our country will be more independ-
ent and will not only read for
themselves but will think as well
and be able to arrive at just con-
clusions. Tho session of the Loc-
al Legislative, that opened last'
Wednesday, will be an interesting
one. Tho oft discussed subject of
1110 bribery brigade will come up,
the school book question will be
placed upon the boards and many
other matters, perhaps, of equal
interest. The Hon. Premier 'does
not appear to have any intention
of resigning and has a good follow-
ing of reliable leen to back him
up. The Dominion Parliament
opens fire at Ottawa this week.
The great trouble with us is that
there is too much on hand when
both Houses are in session and it
is a difficult task to follow both
closely.

the matter worse Mrs. Forbes was

Tho Goderioh Signal hi PIpeculating
as to who would be Warden says :—
That gantlemau is Thomas Strachan,
the able, energetic, liberal -minded,
broad-epiritod-roevo of Grey township.
lIr. Strachan has represented his
township at the county board contin-
uously for the past ton years, and
has during that period proved himself
to be one of tho most ably councillors
at the board. Ile is a good debater,
and of a sound, practical, common-
sense tura of mind, When any ques-
tion of moment has risen iu the coun-
ty council for years past, and it was
of importance that shrewd judgement
and careful tllonght should be had
upon it, almost the first query made
by the promoter's of the scheme was,
"What stand will Tom Strachan take
in regard to it ?" If Strachan thought
favorably of the project, bo always
proved to be an able advocate ; if his
judgement did not recommend it, then
the scheme had an opponent whose
opposition counted far more than his
mere vote. This 1s the man whom
tho county council should honor on
Tuesday next, and the honoring of
Thomas Strachan is a disparagement
to no man. Wo know him, and know
him well, and to know 11in1 is but to
esteem and admire the noble qualities
that centre iu him. He is a man in
everything drat the name implies -
