BRUSSELS never had so many "stop"
wretches within the oorporation Ea 011
last Friday evening. The purchasers
were kept busy on Saturday telling
people the time of day. "Charlie" told
them "Dont show the watch to your
neighbor, for if it ticks you will make
bim feel bad and if it dont tick be will
have the joke on you." It is needless to
say they did not "tick," and a number of
old heads got badly left, It wax a nice

Acomatie.—One day last week as
Councillor Strachan and Geo. El. Cooper
were driving to Wroxeter a dog bounded
out from the fence, near Jamestown and
frightened their horse. The animal took
to the ditoh and upset the buggy in a
twinkling. Mr. Strati's= bad one of hie
legs injured and Mr. Cooper was hurt
about the shoulder and face. It was a
miracle they were not killed as the buggy
bad a cover on which prevented the co-
oupenta from extricating themselves
when the rig overturned. The vehicle
was laid up for repairs, the home leaving
it behind on his 3ourney back to Brae -
sets.

"Last Fria.; evening Prof. Morgan and

with which he 50,8 greeted muse have
satisfied him that he had lost none of his

NIODLY Emm—Last Friday evening
Mexican Charlie and a chum named
"Totnmy" came to town from Blyth and
in the evening with a flourish of trum-
pets, a four horse team, &c., called on
all people to come and see the sights. A
great many responded to the invitation
and gatherei around the wagon, near the
Central hotel, where the program was
opened with songs (to the ememn.pani.
merit of a banjo and bones) and Jokes.
Charlie, who representid himself to be a
doctor and dentist, dilated on the !Met
remeiy offered for sale, warranted to
cure warte or corns, and to prove its
efficacy removed a wart frotn the hand
of a yenth, or rather pretended to do
so. The first purchasers were
returned their money with 10 cents to
buy drinks. The 50 cent packages had
50 cents or 81.00 returned to buy the
cigars. Then came the watch soheme.
The oovetous desire of the foolish ones
bad been cleverly raised, and the 81.00
bills came in as fast as the fakir could
stew them away, in spite of the warnings
of those who knew the dodge. The fakir
encloaed the watch in a package and eaoh
purchaser was to hold it up in the air,
so that the fakir could know who were to
receive another gent gift (a brass pen)
be had for the 81.00 purchasers. This
prevented the dupes looking at what
they had until the fakir had got in all
that he could, and then they found that
for their good money they had received a
Imam box with a watch face, to brass pen
and some sawdust, or stuff squally valu-
able. It was a genuine sell yet done in
such a good natured way that the
ewindled hardly knew where they were
until the light was blown out. Some of
them followed the gamblers into the
hotel where a row ensued and Charlie
drew it revolver and advised all and
sundry not to monkey with the show.
Information was lei(' againet "Dr,"

Woodstock Sentinel Review : Old
churns, cradles and big eggs have had
their day, and now big steere come in
for their turn. A paragraph is going the
rounds to the effect that a Berlin Arm
has purchased a steer weighing 4,000
pounds, standing 8k feet in height and
me:sewing 18 feet in length. The fig•
one are evidently terribly exaggerated.
But our own esteemed citizen, John
Young, is the owner of 8 steer that pro.
wises fair to outstrip even the exagger-
ations of the Waterloo animal. Mr.
Young's steer stands about BOVOLI feet
high by setup.' measureineet—and seven
feat high by stotual measurement is better
than nine or ten feet by more guesswork.
In length it is perhapts fully 18 foot, for
Ib ie nearly all length, except what part
goes to make up the height. It has been
growing high and long for the past 5
years ahd Mr. Young expects it to keep
on for three or four years longer. Te
