drawing manure when one of his horses
balked. He started to punish the horse,
when the brute tricked and struck him in
the face, breaking hie ppar jaw and

G. W. Knight, our genial station
agent, took his departure on Wednesdny
of this week for Ildertot where he has

though sorry to lose such an accommo•
slating agent yet we extend a hearty wel-
come to his successor, Mr. Gillies, of

The shooting match held last Friday
in connection with the opening of the
new Hotel was not as su00oesfel as it
should have been, owing ne doubt to the
cold and disagreeable weather. Owing
to the absence of full teams lbfr. Burton
presented tine trap to the best shot. At
the trial of skill J. Struthers, of Atwooct,
proved more than a match for all other

An effort is being made to get up a
quoitin e tournament in town, to take plane
about the middle of September.
At the meeting of the Council of the
Dominion Alliance, held at Montreal,
Dr. Macdonald, M. P., was appointed on
the committee on legislation.
Thos. Bell is having a stone foundation
put under the frame storeroom at the
south of his faotory, and intends veneer-
ing it with brick, making it three storeys
high and similar to the brick building
whioh it adjoins.
Burglars entered the store of J. J,
Homuth ft Son one night recently, gain-
ing entrance from the rear. Before
reaching the main store they forced three
doors, some of the doors having holes
bored through them. Once inside they
helped themselves to in quantity of goods.
It is supposed that they were disturbed
in their work by the movements of some
of the occupants of the upper fiat of the
store, and that they fled. Several pairs
of pants were found in the rear of the
store. No clue has been found as to the
perpetrators of the burglary. Messrs.
Homuth do Son's loss will amouut to
about 875.

of last week Geo. Denstead's horse broke
loose from the station and ran up Dinsley
street. Making an attempt to enter Mr.
Moser's yard and finding the gate shut
it wheeled and ran down the sidewalk:

Jas. Timmins, general merchant, in-
tends taking advantage of the cheap rail-
way excursion to Quebec and will leave
this week on a business trip to Montreal
and Winohester.

Several farmers around the village of
late have lost a number of sheep that
have boon worried by dogs. September
is generally the month for those depre-
dations to commence around here, but
this year the dogs thought they would
begin in August.
Rev. I. B. and Mrs. Wallwin and Jos.
Leech left last week for the Grimsby
Camp meeting. On account of Mr. Wall -
win being absent, Thos. Jewitt officiated
at the services in the Methodist church

through a worn hole in his pocket.
Wm. Hawkshaw, who until recently
kept a hotel in this town, has leased the
Tbompeon House on King street, London,
and the new hotel will be opened under
his management on Sept. let.
George Whitley, of Seaforth, has sold
his celebrated trotting mare, Florence G.,
to E. C. Coleman, of this town, for
02,400. Florence G. was bred by Mr.
Whitley from Old Clear Grit, and is one
of the very best horses on the Canadian
turf. Mr. Coleman intends her for
breeding purposes.
