Rumex. Ontario barley buyers are
preparing to rush this year's crop aoross
the line as fast as they can in order that
they may escape the MoKmley tariff now
before the Senate at Washington. In
answer to numerous inquiries, we have
telegraphed to our Washington corree-
pondent, who says that at present, mean-
ing up to last Friday evening, the general
belief is that a duty of 25 cents will be
imposed. Mr. McKinley, it will be re-
membered, proposed one of 30, but at a
late stage the figure was placed at 15 and
then up to 25. The farmers in the North-
western States demand 25 at least, and
the Republicans will need their votes this
fall in the State elections. The brewers
in the Eastern States say they have done
their best to induce the Senate Finance
Committee to pat the duty at 15 cents.
50 19 well to beer in mind, however, that
the brewers now nse all sorts of substi-
tutes for good barley, and are not as
much interested in the duty as they ware
in the days of honest beer. The barley
buyers in Toronto and elsewhere will be
seriously incommoded and perhaps ex-
posed to loss if the railways do not bestir
themselves and provide a sufficient snp•
ply of cars.
