guillotine was not used, but the murderer

Two strange suicides took place ahnost

Pitt, who 10119 the Count's favourite joekey,
committed suicide in the same way. Mr,
Halphen's rash net was due to money losses
at the 'Bourse, whilst Pitt's motive appears
to have been a disappointment in love.
A phenomenon is reported from Tatham -
dries, in Hengary, where au aorolith of 80
pounds weight is said to have fallen with
such force that it opened a spring of water
in the earth. As the neighborhood was bad-
ly supplied with water the inhabitants are
talking of the occurrence as providential.
The aerolith has been bought for :6200 by an

In oonsoquenee of the approach of the

than fifty-seven couples were united in wed-

work without interruption from ten o'clock
in the morning 'mei half -past one in the
afternoon. This feat is described by the
officials of the Mairie as " marriage by

If horses are to be the means through
which the farmer will endeavor to make
money, then ho should decide upon the
special class of horses that he will breed to
that end. 11 110 understands Ids 00011 taste
and qualifications he can probably decide
whether he will succeed best in breeding
draft horses, roadsters, trotters, or race
horses. Or, perhaps, he will combine some
breeds in a good, general purpose, farm
horse. The great point is for the farmer to
study the question and his 00011 nalmro and
determine towards wha1 intermediate end
he will work in order to insure the final end,
making money by his vocation.
We have se , „nal excellent varieties of
draft horses, --the Pert:herons, the Clydes-
dales, the Shire -horse and other less dis-
tinct find less popular breeds. Every breed
has its admirers and every breed m some

ehoice is -proverbially &kb In horses as
well as other things. In trotters and running
horses there are several families that have
their admirers, but, we doubt whether
ordinary Wenn% should Jaye anything to
do with those classes. The breeding and
traiuMg of such extra fast horses is the
business of specialists.
For growing beef, there are several breeds
of the bovine species well adapted to the

If the dairy ±0 1)10 proximate means through
which the stock farmer will attempt success,
he must decide whether inlik, butter or
cheese shall be his specialty. If milk, the
Holstein and Ayrshires are the leading milk
breed ; if butter, the Jersey and the Guern-
sey will contest the claim to pre.eminenee.
Perhaps, in coming time, Someone ivill devel-
op a breed combiningmore merits than any
one now in existence.
In sheep, we have Cotswolds and Leices-
torshires for long wool and mutton. Hamp-
shirite, Shropshires, Southdowns and Dor-

Berkshires for medimn and Essex Suffolks
and Yorkshires for mall. In poultry there
ate a great number of breeds and the novice
may well feel at a loss which one to ectleet.
If the end is mainly eggs, some of the broads
that are great layers and but little disposed
to sit, of which the Leghorn is %type, should
be chosen, but if chieles and moat aro the
leading 1010 180100 of the largerAsietle breeds,
the Brahmas or the Coehms are the type ;
or, perhaps it would be better to select a
rose of the extreme types such as the Ply-
mouths. We did not iutond to deoide which
are the better breeds in this paper, but to
urge upon farmers theimportance of choosing
those breeds of the different species best
adapted to the special end in view.

mar as last season. By storms in March
mul April a largo percentage of the calf crop

branded the usual quantity of stock. Crops
n the Calgary district are reported as being
in splendid condition, while those in the
MacLeod district aro not so well. The

Speed Of Animals.
A writer in the &Nu Obsen•er says that he
has sprinkled individual wasps and bees
with rose-colored powder, and has found
that thus handicapped they could with OW
keep up ivith th fastest trains when speed.
1,15 down "Shap Summit," the steepest
gradient in the country. Nor were these (ex-
iled along in the rush of eh. czusecl by the
train. They would come in and ou) of the
0 'below, sometirnes disappearing for a minute
or more, but frequently returning again and
again. At distances of fro,,1 five to ten miles
they dropped behind, when others took their
place. Pettigrew states that the male of the
silk worm travels at the re.te of 100 miles a
day. The speed of flight attained by pigeons
is well known, and at the time the French
iere making trials with messenger swallows
the German Emperor ordered extensive ex-
periments to be carried out with carrier
pigeons, to be tested at the coining imperial
noutouvres. Upon this six of the first Co -
limitation societies of Germany each offered
o supply 24 birds, which are now hi train-
ing. 80 that we have it that the Flinch tire
rideavoring to Diehl swallows, the Germans
dgeons, and the R11E8111113 10/10135.
As a practical proof of the possible value
of pigeons a.s carriers, the following incident
may be given 1 As an experiment a trained
tird was despatolied from a northern news-
paper office, with a, request that it might be
liberated for its return journey (01 0.45 A.11.
It reached home at 1.10 P.M., having cov-
ered in the meantime 140 miles at 40 miles
an hour. In the north pigeons have long
been used to convey messages between
country houses and market towns, and in
Russia they ate now being employed to eon -
my negatives of photographs taken in
ialloons. The first experiment of the kind
vas made from the eupola of the Cathedral
of Isaac, and the subject, photographed was
the Whiter Palace. The plates were packed
n envelopes impenetrable to light and then
tied to the feet of pigeons, which safely and
quickly carried them to tho station at Vol -
cove.
Here is a recent interesting instance of
peed and staying power in pigeons. The
birds in question flew from Bordeaux to
Manchester, and not only beat fill existing
'words, but flew more than seventy miles
further than anything previously attempted
by English flyers. The winning bird flew
at the rate of 1879 yards a minute, or over
64 miles an hour, for a distance of 142*
miles. The same club has flown birds dis-
tances of 318 and 025 miles. These latter,
lowever, were several clays in returning,
and in thee case the only wonder is that
they could accomplish the distance at all.
The following is still more interesting, as
ib entailed ft race between bitcls and insects.
A pigeon fanaier of Hamm°, in Westphalia,
nen 10. Wager that a dozen bees liberated
three miles from their hive, would teach it
hi better time than a dozen pigeons would
reach their cot front the same distance. The
competitors wore given wing at Rhyithern,

Oats For Calves,
The most troublesome period 0vit1, young

if well and strong, most quickly, thorough-
ly, and constantly clears the udder of
milk, whieli if partially removed, by sloven-
ly and imperfect milking, produces caking
of the udder.
Young calves will early eat fine hay, and
next begin to eat it tableap00111111 of dey oats.
The milk should be given night and morn-
ing only, and at 1500(1 0. few dry oats. To
induce the calf to eat them, they may, at
first, be very slightly moistened with milk.
The oats should not be put in the milk, for
they either choke the tali, or piles to the
fourth stomach entnasticated, where they
will not digest. Give the oats on an empty
stomach. When the 0(111 15 hungry, Untid-
ily begins to chew them. By thus sparing-
ly feeding calves, the mastication, mace,
Mien and digestion, through all the func-
tions of the four stomachs, are gradually
and naturally established, thus keeping the
calf healthy, strong, and growing. The de.
