CUT THE WEED0.—As usual, the coun- try is more or lees overrun with Canada thiatlee, rag weed, ox -eye daisy, burdook and other noxious weeds. These pests are not only spreading in country places on farms, on every eideroad and (*mese- ion—but many of the side streeta and vacant lots in this town have grown rank with them. What are the authorities doing in this matter? and wbat are the land. owners ? Chapter 202 of the R. S. 0. distinctly etates that it shall be the duty of every owner of land or the co. oupent to Oet down or destroy all the Canada thistlee, ox -eye daisies, Wild oats, rag weed and burdock growing on hie land. It is the bounden duty of all mull. ioipal officials to at least keep the streets and roads clear of noxious weeds, if they do not enforce the penalty against private property. But until the law with regard to both public: and private property is en. foroed the country will continue to bo overrun by tarmac There is very little use in one man's trying to keep down these weed pegs, whilst the publio high- ways, vacant lots ana railways are allow - ad to be a breeding ground for Mom. For the public good stria measures should be imposed. to check the disaemination of this aestructive army of weeds. The in- jury to the mope of Ontario every year le inestimable, and every year ands the thistle, ox.eye daisy and wild oat pots on the inerease, and soen every other Dann will have to be laid down to pea. ture or summer followed in order to eheek tho epread of these paste. The exhibit contains an immense horn, meas- uring 15 feet, 4 inches, 12 inches in diameter at base and weighing 210 pounds ; an ivory tooth. weighing 161 pounds ; 81 ribs ; and portions of the beakbone. Soientists affirm that the animal would stand 20 feet high, 40 feet long and weigh from 15 to 20 tons. The speeimens exhibited were found while looking for water on the farm of W. B. Jelly, 10 miles from Orangeville, in Ama- ranth township, Dufferin Co. It sets people wondering when they see these remains as to the monsters that once in- habited this globe. A skeleton, belong- ing no doubt to the same speoies of ani. mal, has been unearthed recently at Highgate, Kent Co. They have the 2 till compliment there we believe. Mr. Black, who was here on Monday, says efforts will be made to seoure the balance of the Woes from Mr. Jelly's swamp this Summer. A. higb value is placed upon the wonderful exhibit and it ia well worth seeing. Le TROUBLE AoSIN.—The daily Globe of Tuesday says : —Carrie McKenzie, alias Maggie Morrison, alias Maggie McDon- ald, alias Mary Wilson, alias Laura Smith, was arrested in Boston yesterday. She left Toronto some months eigo and went to Buffalo where she was engaged as a servant by a gentleman named Idillar. She gave the name of Mary Wilson there, and by ben pleasing manners and acaom. plishments soon won the confidence of her employer and the eateem of his fam- ily. Mr. Millar and hie family one day not long ago drove out to bis BUMMer residence, a few miles from the eity, leaving Miss Wilson In charge of his town honse. During his absenoe the un- faithful servant packed two large trunks with everything of value she could lay her hands on. A seal jacket, Bilk dresses, a gold watch and other valuable jewellery, amounting in all to about 51,500. She then telephoned for an expressman and ordered the trunks taken to the depot, saying Mr. Millar, whose credit was good, would pay the charges. She left Buffalo and all trace of her was lost until Sun- day night, when Mr. Millar and a Buffalo detective arrived in Toronto. Upon being taken through the rogues' gallery at police headquarters, Mr. lkIillar recog- nised the photograph of his educated ser- vant. It will be remembered that this is the same young woman who operated aneceesfully last summer in Toronto. The deteotives were notifiea of thefts ire. quently, but ehe managed to elude them until she fell into a trap set for her and was arrested. John Cuddy conceived the idea that the gill chose to serve the wealthier elassee, and, buying an evening paper, be set out to vieit the prominent families who had advertised for servants At the moond placie he visited he found the woman he was in search of. She was bronght before Magistrate Denison, oonvioted and sent to the Mercer Refor- matory for six months. She is about 22 years of age, pretty and well educated, having taught school at Vivian for some time before coming to Toronto. DIED.—We regret to hear of the death of Hubert, ton of John E. Smith, of Brandon, formerly a well known rerri- dent of Brosaele. The Brandon Sun says :—At 1 o'clock Friday morning, July 11011, Hubert Rutherford Hunter, third son of John E. Smith, passed away to be with Jesus. He had been ailing for rionie months, but big disease was only diecovered three weeks ago ; though ex - Noted it might terminate fatally, there wee no apprehension of any immediate clanger. Even as late as Thursday morn. Mg it was thought he might linger till fall. Four years ago on recovering from a eel:ions illnerie, his grandparents took him to Ontayio with them. He returned So his home last August 0, beautiful little fellow, of a most, oheetful diaposition, beloved and admired by all who knew him. His grandfather, Jas. M. Hunter, of Dualutm, Oat, arrived Friday evening greatly shocked to find the little follow had Moral(' Many. His grandmother, Who adored tbe ohild, telegraphed 00. (pleating the funeral be delayed till her arrival. Olo Saturday Word Was received that Muth had 'prevailed on hos Lot 26 undertalce the long wearisome journey in her present delicate health. The funeral service on Sunday afternoon was the largest attended of any child's funeral ever held in the city and was most itn- preseive. In the absence of the pastor, Be,. Mr. Urquhart, Rev. Mr. Pickett officiated, taking for his subject IlKings, IV, 18 to 25 verses, delivering an affect- ing and appropriate &agrees. after the service in tbe church the S. S. children, marshalled by the Superintendent and teachers, milked in procession part way to the cemetery, then forming into a solid square they allowed the carriages to pass. The ohildren of the Band of Hope of which Hubert was a member, placed on the casket a beautiful anchor of flowers, and a sickle, aromas, wreathe and boquets were sent in by many kind friends. The flowers were photographed Monday niorning, when the anchor and one large cross were forwarded to the sorrowing grandniother in Ontario. The bereaved family have the sympathy of their many friends in this sad affliction. It is stated that Thomas Ballantyne is likely to be elected Speaker of the On. tario Assembly next seseion. Mr. Bal- lantyne has represented South Perth sinoe 1875 and has just been re.eleoted by over six hundred majority. He is one of the leading agriculturists of the province. John Elliott, of St. Marys, has recent- ly seemed the contraot for the erection of two large county bridges on the town. lines between Perth and Waterloo. The one across the River Nith has a 90 ft. span and iron superstructure, the other is on the Huron road between Shakes• peare and New Hamburg and has a 30 it. span with iron superstructure. In both instances the faced stone conies from St. Marys. The annual report of the inspector of division courts shows the business done in Perth county as follows :—Suits en- tered, 1,815 ; amount of claims, 547,228.- 86 ; transcriptions from other courte, 91, involving, 56,178.92 ; judgment sum- monses issued, 127 ; amount of suitore' money paid into court, 519,510.96; do. out of court, 519,388.39. These figures give some ides of the volume of business done in this line, and while it is not perhaps pleasant to know that such a court is ao much of a neeessity, it is pleasant to know that tradesmen have so efficient an agency to assist them in moving reluctant debtors. An unfortunate scalding accident car. °erred on Saturday afternoon last at Goettler's saw mill, Fullerton. In the manufacture of cheese boxes, which is carried on in the mill, a large hot water tank about 12 feet long, 6 feet wide and the mine depth is used, in which the logs from which the boxes are to be made, are boiled for a couple of days. Into this tank of boiling water Richard Harris, an employee at Hie mill, fell am oidentally about one o'clook on Satur- day, Before he could get out he Blipped in again. The &et time his right leg was scalded up to about the knee, and the second Bumble left was scalded up to the hip. He was quickly pulled out by two fellow employees. While the scalds are serious, hie life is not supposed to be in danger, though ineemaaitated from work for some time. The Heron Expositor and Atwood Bee have been telling stories of old churns still in tam in families in their vioinitiem respeotively 30 and 34 years old. They both have to take o back seat, however. William Fraeer, Mornington street, Stmt. ford, has a wooden churn which he bought in February, 1842, having been got with the household effeete porchased at that time in connection with fdr. Fraser's marriage with his good wife. Tho ohurn will be entitled to a prominent place in 1892, lese than two years hence, when this oonple will celebrate their golden wedding. The churn is now 48i years old. It wee bought from a cooper named Elder, who was plying his trade in tbe city at the time, and the churn is all complete and in good order still. Mr. Fraser has some other old relies: in his poeseesion, for example an and -iron brought from Scotland in 1830; a olothee cheat, which Wee formerly owned by Mra.
