Beware of the coffee-pot, for in it, as
well as in the wine -glass, lurks the demon
of alcoholisna. Snob is the warning ut-
tered by Dr. Mendel, a &moue Berlin
physician, who has made a close study of
the subject. His investigations have Gov.
ered Germany, but he has given speoial
observation to the great working force in
the gun factories at Baden, where wages
are high and einploymea uninterrupted,
and a comparative degree of luxury is
within flee reach of ail. The people of
Essen drink immense quantities of coffee,
brieging the average for a large portion
of them up to a pound a week, many men
taking much more than that. The result
is a form of neurosis, in which the nerves
are disturbed in a degree and manner ap-
proaohing that whioh accompauies delir-
ium tremens. Intoxioation is followed
by gloom and sleeplessness, and about all
the disorders aharocteristo of acute ner
vons derangement, added to a hate for
work. As in the use of alcohol or opium,
temporary relief often can be had by
more and stronger coffee, by tinctures of
coffee formed by crushing the berries in
spirits ; but the are of a confirmed
coffee dankard is next to unknown, un-
less the final change to pure alcoholism
he counted as a oure. And no one who
has investigated the subject will take
that view, Neither coffee nor tea drink-
ers are sale when they go beyond the
bounds of moderation.
