Sellery preached a very interesting discourse to the Sabbath school taking fur his text "Bring hither the best robe and put it upon him." The parable of the Prodigal sou was sketched and the robe as it represents righteous- ness expl, ined. Tlie following eight reasons were given, accompanied by suit- able illustrations, why it was the best robe :—(1) It cost so much to provide it. (2) It protects the body and soul as no other garment can. (3) It suits all ages, classes and occasions. (4) It wears -o well. (5) It grows as we grow. (6) It costs net so little. (7) We can do more and better work with it. (8) It's the robe that's worn in heaven. The service was a very profitable one and was greatly enjoyed by both young and old. TEAIPERANOE.--We are always pleased to have the old question of Temperance dealt with from either the pulpit, plat- form 0 press. Sunday evening last Rev. S. Battery, B. A., B. D., took as the sub. jest of his disoouree. He spoke of the quantity of liquor manufactured ; the amount of money expended in it ; the number of persons engaged in the traffic; the revenue derived and the expenditure of enforcing the law ; the crime, misery, disaster and death occasioned by its use. Prohibition was pronounced as the only remedy and to seeurs this we want public sentiment of such a character with no one but Prohibitionists will be elected to Parliament. The church, the publics and Sunday school and the ballot box meet work hand in hand. The following in. teresting elatietios were gleaned from the reverend gentleman's remarks ;-100,- 000,000 bushels of grain is annually man. ufactured into beer ; Great Britain's liquor bill amounts to 91,000,000,000 an- nually ; United States 61,000,000,000, and Ontario 950000000. 20,000 mon are en- gaged in the traffic. The total revenue is 5280,000,000 and the total expenditure 92,500,000,000. f of the crimes commits- ed is traced to drink. There is estimat- ed to be 50,000 drunkards in Canada and 800,000 in the United States. An official pamphlet claims for various Manitoba cities and towns the following populations :—Winnipeg about 25,000 ; Selkirk, 800 ; Portage la Prairie, 2,500 ; Brandon, 3,000 ; Rapid City, 300 ; Glad- etoue, 300 ; Neepawa, 800 ; Birtle, 400.
