TOE Durham Chronicle Bays :—STILL
Ho LIVES.—Nothing has been heard of
our old time totem, A.. H. N. Jenkins,
for a time, but after all his hardehips
from outside opposition and a proverbial
editor's purse to book up an expensive
law suit to prove his contentions correct,
which has laid him on his back for a
time, he is now to come before the world
as manager and editor of the Brantford
daily Telegram. A. H. N. never had
room for all his big ideas in a weekly
paper, and with his changed surround.
ings, and some one to supply the ballast,
we expect to sea him shine before the
public and run the fame of the Telegram

hope to see him do well.

LEoruni,—Last Monday evening the
Methodist ohuruh was filled with en in.
terestecl and appreciative audience to
hear the lecture on "'the Human Voice,"
by Rev. Jim, Livingstone, of Cliutoe.
lyor ahtvards of at hour the reverend
lecturer dilated on this important sub-
ject, explaining what voice was, how it
should be need and cared for and the
necessity of training this very important
ageut. To show the flexibility of the
voice he recited, in good style, "The
creed of the belle," The murder of Dun-
can by Macbeth, and The dream of Olar.
euce, followed by impersonations of Dr.
Talmage and Josh Billings proved be-
yond a doubt that lir. Livingstone is not
only a good lecturer but a first-class elo-
cutionist. The exhibition of a olass
reacting ju sehool was very amusing. Al-
together a very enjoyable hour was put
in and the lecturer well deserved the
vote of thanks given him. The Young
Peoples' Association, under whose nes-
Vices the the entertainment was given, is to
be ouugratulated on the success of their
venture. A silver collection was taken
at the close of the meeting,
Tim Smelt Ste. Marie Algoma Pioneer
of August 30th saga :—The new steam
fire -engine ordered last week by the
council, front the Ronald manufactory,
Brussels, Ont., arrived yesterday morn-
ing by the steamer United Empire, at-
tendod by the manufacturer, Mr. Ronald,
and an engineer. At 3 p. on. to -day the
machine was ready for work, and taking
her stsud upon the International dock
two lines of 500 feet of hose were lair)
and rho fire started. In 7e• minutes from
the time smoke emerged from, her stack
she was throwing water ; in 8 minutes
a le inch stream was rattling upon the
roof of the International hotel ; a minute
later on the stream covered the tower
in twelve minutes it covered the ball at
the top of the nag—staff, and flow thirty
feet above it. This heavy streamwas
thrown with sufficient foroe to strip
shingles or knock down a brick obi mney,
and was steadily maintained tvith the
greatest ease by a pressure of 90 pounds
of steam. At the second test two it inoh
streams were thrown through the same
length of hose and did equally good work.
A. third test was made with four a inch
streams, tate engine running steadily
under 80 to 50 pounds steal,, and the
wetter flying over the roof and towers of
the mammoth hotel. A fifth stream, le
inoh, was also started from the engine
herself, used for rho purpose of extingu-
ishing flying umbers and protecting her-
self from destruction. The gutters on
Bruce street were kept full by the falling
water. The engine was as steady as a
barn while doing her work, and it was
the unanimous opinion that the town
has reuoived a first-class fire.fighter.
Another test will be made from Plum-
mer's dock, to-n1orrow, Saturday, after
which the machine will be handed over
to the town as soon as her suction -pipe
and some other trifling injuries received
during transit by boat are made good.
The price of the engine and 1500 feet of
hose is $5000, twenty years 5 per cent.
debentures at par being accepted for pay-
ment.
THE Boost Conesens.—The Winnipeg
Sun of August 28th has this to say :—
"Wedding bells rang out clear and mer-
rily this afternoon in the vicinity of
Notre Dame street west. Two hands
were joined and two hearts united till
death do them part. The joyous couple
were W. R. Thompson, formerly of Perth,
Ont., but now employed in Jerry Robin-
son's, and Miss Lizzie J. McIntosh,
daughter of D. McIntosh, Both princi-
pals are well-known and very popular in
the oiroles in which they move. The
bride was supported by her sister Lillie,
and the bridegroom was upheld by Mr.
Eisen. Rev. Mr. Rutledge officiated.
The bride was attired in a wine.colored
satin dress trimmed with white satin and
