The old man's death wee cowed by eeeerel debility and Ohl age, and the cline for which the dccoased was inearceeted was , b f judgment poverty. Tide is another ease for which county 00000illore will have to answer, and the one "that I paused to be placed within stone walls to teat bis 'glass of water' " will then not les a pleasing nue. Let us hope that before ninny years have Teemed men of four score years and nine will find some other refuge then a jell to die in, but this will never happen in the Canuty of Huron until its county coun- cillors havo learned the lesson that the poor have feelings as well as the rich. Peter Cole, of Goderich townehip, noticed his dog obese something across a field very wickedly, and going to sec what was wrong, found that It had treed 8 good-sized bear. He could hardly be- lieve himself at first but there it woo up a tweuty foot sapling. Hastily scouring his gun he fired three discharges into it, but aehe had nothing but slugs and shot, it did not hurt his bearship very mule Some of the neighbor° being attracted by the unusual continotion came and knocked the animal out of the tree and finished him with pitcli£orks, olubs, elo. It was a good sized one, sup- posed to be somewhere about a year okl, almost jet black, but where it could have sbrayed from uo one knows, as smelt an animal has not been known running wild in the township for twenty years. A Coen:NzmS of the Reformers of the East Riding of Huron will be held in the Town Hall, Brussels, on Monday, Sept. 23rd, commencing at 2 o'clock. It is ex- pected that at this meeting a candidate will be chosen as standard bearer in the coming election for the Local Legislature for this Riding. A largo attendance of delegates is expected from all the muni- cipalities. In all probability one of the members of the Cabinet will bo on hand, along with local speakers, to address the gathering. PEE:IEE allowA'r is beokfrom his trill to the Old Country. TireHaldimaud County election trial is once more on the program. It is Mr. Colter's innings this time. Judge Fal- eonbridge is hearing the ease. Is it not about time that our residents accustomed themselves to the names of our streets instead of directing people "Go up to where that team is. turn to your left and the Mouse you want is the fourth after you pass e. stable with red doors 1" WE commend the following item to the careful consideration of those oppos- ed to the erection of a House of Refuge for Huron County : Robert Fletcher, an indigent, aged 80 years, died in Goderich jail on Wednesday of last week. A formal inquest was held in the evening, and a verdict returned that deceas- ed died from natural causes. Fletcher had spent about four yeare in jail. Ms crime was that he was old, helpless and feeble, and had no friends. Rio death is another pretest against the nation of the county council hi not erecting n house of refuge, wbero the aged and decrepit can bo proper- ly cared for.•'—Godorloh Signal. IN a few days the great Industrial Ex- position, which is to be held at Toronto from the Oth to the 21st of September, will be in full swing, and visitors will be flocking to it from all parts of the cone - try. The entries show that the exhibits in all departments will be larger and better than ever, and a long programme of special attraotions for every clay of the Fair has been published. Several new buildings have been erected during the present year and many new features in. troduced. Excursions are being organ- ized from many distant points in the United States, the Maritime Provinces and the Northwest, and there will be two special cheap excursions from every point in Ontario. The annual success of this great show is something remarkable; the people appear to justly take a pride iu it, and make it the occesion of their annual holiday outing, and there is every prob- ability that this year's show will be away ahead of all othere both in extent and quality of the exhibits, as well as the attendance of visitors. Over 700 horses and 000 Head of cattle have al- ready been entered, and every foot of space in all the buildings has been p.p. plied for. The great Dog Show will be one of the interesting features of the Fair, and the Firework displays will be grander than ever before. Brussels Council. The "City of Stratford" the original and only steamer Stratford ever possess- ed has been sold and is to be removed from the classic city possibly by express. It was to have been sent by parcel post but it was feared that it world be lost 1 sight of among the other mail matter. The following from a Stratford paper may be taken as a vivid and aocurate description of their fatuous pleasure re. sort known as Victoria Lake;—"A horse got badly mired in the soft mud an the banks of the Avon opposite Queen's park the other day, and was rescued when but a few lathes of his beak was above ground." The Stratford Beacon says ;-On Wed- nesday a base ball club struck the city and played a game with the city club. The boys were graciously pleased to bo beaten by the "belles of the bar," the score being fixed at 18 to 17. The Alength of the dress of the females was not such I as to interfere with a lively sprint, bare- ly reaching below the knee.
