JUNE N 1889. .
Tue Montreal Witness says ;•-The one
great desire expressed at the anti•Jesnit
Convection in Toronto was for work.
Organization has been completed at the
eeutral point. It is now for the branches
to be carried on in every corner of the
Province, This is what the delegates
clamored for. They now have the op.
portunity, Every branch formed, every
petition signed, every local meeting held
Must have in it the spirit of the neutral
authority, which took the ground that
both political parties betrayed their trust
by refusing justice to the minority in
Quebec. No politics should interfere ;
and no better evidence of the temper of
the Convention le this respect was needed
than its refusal to pass a resolution ac-
knowledging that lir. Mowab'a Govern-
ment bad made an effort to right matters
in so far as the English language in the
eastern schools was concerned. If the
work of forming branch associations goes
forward in keeping with the pledges
made, the rest will be ea -y , The Jesuits'
Estst s :1.et may be even yet disallowed
by Sir John daodcnald's own wish. On-
tario has formed her plans. The other
provinces wit take their owu course.
One thing very apparent was Ontario's
determination to stand by the Quebec
minority ; it is expressed in every line of
the organization rales. The voice of that
minority spoke through it all. It is now
for that minority to oontinue in its fear•
less, dignified and manly position, stand-
ing upon its rights under the constitu-
tion.
We give plaoe in another column to a
letter from a Morris Township farmer,
irbotravels the gravel road, complaining
of the meagre amount - of money to be
expended this summer. $200 will go a
very short distance, as that amount
could easily be spenton different sections
of the road in the space of one mile. We
think the two Reeve should see that the
work is properly attended to and that a
sufficient amount of gravel is put en to be
of somo practical benefit. It will pay
bettor to do a certain section well each
year than attempt to skim over the whole
distance. We have been asked to quote
the law referred to a few weeks ago. The
principle sections are :
"Whenever Township Councils fail to
maintain Township boundary lines not
assumed by the County Council, in the
same way as other Township roads, by.
mutual agreement as to the share to be
borne by each, it shall be competent for
cne or more of such Councils to apply to
the County Counoil to enforce joint ac-
tion on all ship Councils interested,"
"In eases where all the Township Coun-
cils interested neglect or refuse to open
up and repair such lines of road in a sb
manner sip ihtr to the ether local ro^ds,
it ellen be competent for a majority sf Su
the ratepayers resident on the lots bar- $0
dering on either or both sides of scull lino
to petition the County Council to enforce
the opening up or repair of such li yes of
url"
road by the Towuship 0o.s interested.'

The Laymene' Convention and plat-

the Conference closed the laymen voted
the proposed amendments down. The
whole thing was looked upon as the "get

here, it has always been my en-

the market allows, and in the
past years have paid city market

to pay the highest' price going.
In exchanging wool for goods will
allow a few cents more. Will
