Nice Bed Spreads.
Twelve large silk handkerchiefs with bro-

bed spread. The handkerehiefe,were of

sheeting just as one does crazy work, and
were joined together by elaborately embroi-

It is really surprising to know now many
people there are who live " from hand to
mouth," who never Bove any money and
have nothing laid byfor emergencies.
-Many families, too, with a good income,
spend as they earn it, and are always out

Every boy and girl should learn to save a

To be thrifty is oaoh a good thing and
brings more hkppiness than some people
guess.
A prominent man of ono of our large
cities onoe said, " I had rather have my

either extreme is bad, bub lb is not neces-
sary to chose between the two evils ; wise
economy is what is desirable.

After mature reflection upon the mishap,
the consul called the moot intelligent of the
cavaeaes. He questioned him. Tho oaveeo
insisted that he did not steal the silver, and
that he did not know who did. But the
consul was a very good detective, and
shrewd in his knowledge of mon and things.
He was also a cool•tempered man.
He said to the oavaoo-" There is n0 u80

my silver to me within 24 hours. else you

"Mr. Consul," said the CAvase, " I have
already told you that I did nob steal your
silver, but still you suspect me, I will,
however, do all in my power to detect the
robber. I only beg of you to do for me
passively all I will ask you to do."
The consul replied, "I will do so, provid•
ed you bring back the property."
The ovens asked for two or three hours'
time, and loft. In an hour he came back,
bringing with him by the bridle a little don-
key, Thin he presented to the consul, stat-
ing that the donkey would find bhe thief 1ff
he would allow the donkey to be plaoed in
one of the rooms and the window.ohubtere
tobe closed so as to darken the room.
"Do so," said the ooneul, who became
ourioue to see what would result.
After bhe donkey was plaoed in the dark
the °avamm naked the ooneul to oall every-
body in the house, -employes, cavasses, and
servants. They came, and were placed in
front of the door of the room where the don•
key was,
When all were present the covens said-
" Now
aid"Now we are to enter this room one by one,
and as aeon as we get in we are to have a
pull ab the donkey's tail. The donkey will
make no sign, gay nothing, unless the rob-
ber ie amongst us. Then you may depend
on ib he will bray, and indicate who has
stolen your geode. Oh, do not laugh l I
have had oosasion to make use of this re-
medy. Ib never fails. Now," said he to the
consul, "you go in firs* and pull the tail.
We will all follow you, one by one."
The singular procession began, the ooneul
taking the lead. Every one entered the
room and pulled at the donkey's tail ; but
the donkey never brayed. After the per.
formanoe was over and all name out, the
cavass asked if all of them had really pulled
at the tail.
All responded emphatically, " Yee 1"
" How strange it is," said he, " bhat the
donkey did not bray 1 ft seems that the
thief is not to be found amongst us. I can-
not explain ib otherwise."
Ho now formed them in a circle round
him, "Now, ladiea and gentlemen," he
said, "hands up, please 1"
Every one obeyed.
" Here is your man, Mr. Omni," said he
all at once, pointing to one of the party, a
servant. " You see, every one who entered
the room, and pulled the tail thus gob his
hands blackened, while this man did not
pull bhe tail, as he was sure the donkey
would bray. Ooneequently his hands are
clean."

where some of the representative women of
Boston were assembled. The subject under
discussion was " dress." After the ethical
aide of dress had been duly ooneidered and
the decollette gowns frowned upon, one
sweet -voiced sister arose and said : " Why
could not we be sensible like the men ; they

earnest• and then I remembered tbob she
belonged to that estimable class called spin-

the ups and downs and ins and outs of this
kaleidoscopic world I recall pertain scenes
in a household of men when dressing for a
party. I remember with certain nervous
twinges the demands for needle and thread ;
the utterances, not sweet but strong, con-
cerning a delinquent tailor ; the angry
twitahings given an innocent necktie, and
the fearful denunciations of some far•away
laundress.
