The revival services in the Methodist
ohuroh here closed this week. A good
work has been done in the congregation,
about thirty-five having sought salvation,
most of whole will unite with the church.
Tho pause generally has been greatly
lifted up by the revival. The pastor
labored alone, employing only what help
was to be found in the congregation, and
the work here proved very successful.
Potr'rcoe,—On Tuesday evening of last
week Dr. Macdonald M. P. held Ins pen -
tical meeting here. Au invitation had
been extended, in the bills, to any wish•
ing to take part in the discussion of pub•
lie questions and T. Farrow, A. EI. Mee -
grove end Editor Jenkins responded as
representatives of Toryism, while tho Dr.
was assisted by Dr. Horsey, of Wingbam.
Wm. ilohlwan was elected chairman.
Dr. Macdonald opened the electing by a
hall -hour speech, dealing with tho prin-
cipal public questions of the day, more
particularly Imperial Federation, wbioh
he said it would bo folly to expect. lir.
Jenkins spent half an hour an abusing
the Dr. and io explaining that he had.
said nothing worth answering. This was
the "Budget's" first appearance as a pub-
lic speaker here, and the impression that
he made called forth remarks from both
Reformers and Conservatives, anything
but flattering or complimentary to him,
The feelings which he excited were snub
as a drunken man occesionally excites
among small boyo. They hate him for
his beffonery, detest him for hie degra-
dation, while they art grsatty ateun zd by
the abacuno of his faculties. Dr. Horsey,
who followod him, descrieed his speech
as the "most conglomerated mass of nn-
adulteratod bosh that over wan heard."
Ho then made a short speech, showing a
wide knowledge, and amn0ing all, es-
peoially the ladies, by his humorous re-
marks. Mr. Mosgrove then spoke foe
half tun hour on our trade relations with
the United States and was followed by
Mr. Farrow who spent an hoar in de-
nouncing the Dr., especially finding
fault with him for not giving him (Far-
row) more time, and using language that
would be a disgrace to a gentleman.
When the Dr, rose he said three things
wore necessary to making a &pooch, time
place and a subject. "Mr. Farrow," he
said, "has had a large and intelligent au-
dience and has spoken for 00 minutes ou
myself, so that he lacked none of the
three requirements." He the,'i proceed-
ed to show the advantages or closer trade
relations betweeu Canada and the United
States end that these would be exceed•
fngly more beneficial to thi, country than
for it to remain as it in, because tho
Uni.od States is the boot market for our
produse. Ho was frequently interrupted
daring his remarks by both Farrow and
,Tenpins. who tried every plan to grove
assertions incre
