The camp of latlb will be long temem. bared afi being a severe strain on the physical endurance of those who took part in it ; a change in the temperature of over 50 degrees m a few hours is bad enough in itself. This cannot be govern- ed or controlled by any human aid, but there is a matter that should be well con- sidered, that of Inter supply. The evil effect produced by the use of tepid water, and the abhorrence felt at the very thoughts of being compelled to drink it is sufficint to upset the stomach and make camp life very unpleasant as well as dangerous. I would suggest that in. stead of placing the pipes through which the water is conducted to the grounds four inches below the surface, a second furrow with a subsoil plow should be made so ns to gain a depth of not less than eight or ten inches. Then when the pipes are placed in position the same should be well covered and packed with the loose soil and the sod part placed on top so as to prevent the possibility of be- ing affected by the heated state of the atmosphere. The same mistake made in Stratford this year was made two years ago in Loudon, and the only time during 24 hours whet a cool drink of water could be obtained was early in the morn- ing. I make the above suggetitions in the interest of men and officers alike. The same is applicable to London as well as Stratford, and wherever the camp may be located in the future it will be well to carefully look into the water question. To the citizens of Stratford is due the thanks of the whole brigade for the universal kindness bestowed on one and all. An episode of a very interesting nature took place within the lines of the 38rd Battalion in the shape of an address and presentation of a silver-niounted cane and a valuable meerschaum pipe to Cap- tain Wm. Sam Jones, the famous Georgia reviv- alist, preathed in the Methodist church at Detroit on July let to an immense congregation composed largely of Ameri- cans. An action was recently brought in the Massaohussetts courts against the Boston and Providence railway company by a lady who claimed a free pass over the road on the ground that shale thedaught- er of John 0. The grand -daughter olaims that she is entitled to the privileges named in the deed and that the word family meant descendants of the granter. The rail- road company demurred, bort Judge Allen, of the State supreme court, has over- ruled the demurrer and expressed the opinion that under the deed the Boston and Providence railroad oorapany would be required to carry free the descendants of Mn. Dodge for all time. This decision will make railway companies careful about granting family passes.
