The third annual meeting of the Wing -
ham District met at 9 o'clock on Tues-
day morning in the Methodist church
here, Rev. D. C. MoDowoll, chairman,
presiding. After devotional exercises
lieu. J. S. Cook, of Bluevale. was elected
Secretary and Rev.A. E, r mith, of Wrox-
eter, assistant.

A profitable discussion on the state of
the work on the various fields of labor fol-
lowed.
Owing to the transfer of the present
chairman to the Toronto conference it
was decided that the members of the
District meet on the morning of June 7111
at Seaforth to select another for the con-
ference term.

Attorney -General Mowat left Toronto
Saturday evening for Kingston en route
to England, where he will represent the
Provincial Government before the Privy

pany, the dispute between the Dominion

Two eminent engineers, James Ross,
of Sherbrooke, Quo., and B. ]3aker, of
London, Eng., in company with Nichol
Kingsmill, counsel for the Michigan Cen-
tral Railroad in Canada, arrived at De-
troit Sunday for the purpoee of taking
the neoessary preliminary steps for Bett-
ing in motion n gigantic and carefully
prearranged scheme for tunneling the
Detroit River. They are satisfied the
work can be done, and will so report. A
gigantic syndicate, known as the Michi-
gan c0 Canada Tunnel Company, repre-
senting more than 1100,000,0,0 of capital
has been legally formed in Canada and
will bo properly qualified for transacting
business under the Michigan State law at
once. This syndicate is composed of D.
0. Mills, the powerful New York capital-
ist ; Geo, Bliss, of Morton, Bliss c0 Co.,
N. Y. ; Mr. Laidlaw, of the Bank of Cali
forma ; Mr. Hawes, of the Michigan Cen-

James O'Neil, a respectable farmer,
near Kinloss, committed suicide Thurs-
day morning by cutting his throat with
a razor. No reason has been assigned
for the act. Ile leave, a wife and large
family.
Mury Elliott, about thirty years of age,
daughter of George Elliott, of Ayr, com-
mitted suicide on Friday morning of last
week, by cutting her throat with a razor.
So far no cause can bo assigned for the
rash act.
Jacob Lippet, who was supposed to
have walked into the river at Hanover
last fall, and whose friends offered a re-
ward of 150 for his body, was found
under a stump, not far from whore he
was supposed to have been drowned, the
other dsy.
Me. Van Horne has been endeavoring
to coerce the Government of Manitoba
into buying the Emerson branch of the
C. P. R. and glue up the Red River Val.

J. Fraser Bryoe, the photographer of
Toronto, was the victim of a peculiar
and very painful accident last Thursday
night. Ho was taking pert in an organ
recital in the Prirkdale Presbyterian
church, and just before standing lip to
sing ho put his hand in his pocket to get
a potash tablet for the purpose of clear-
ing his throat, Unluckily, in the same
pocket were some matches, and the aul-
pher of the snatch coming in contact with
the chloride of potash caused an explosion.
Tho pocket was torn and the hand badly
lacerated.
