No, 9, — --._.:. AUGUST CROP REPORT. GENEn,1Lr CONDITION or CROM--In the estimate of yields of grain made during the present month it is to be carefully noted that the yields are for the most part based upon observation in the Ifnld daring the growth of the crops and also during their harvesting, Labor returns are based upon actual threshing results. In 1891 our August esbirrnmbe was found to be considerably below ilia actual yield as was afterwards determined, the grain as it rials, having been much heavier and lib IOber than was at flesh supposed. Laeb year was a most favorable year for grain of all kinds. This year, however, hila season has not been of so favorable a na- ture and from the many comments ao- bompanying tine estimates of yield re- ferring to Shrunken grains, too rapid. fillfug and ripening, eto., it is greatly to be feared that more exact dstorm fnabions made subsequently will prove the esti- mated yields of the vmcfoua grains in thfa bullebiu bon high rather than too low. FALL WHEAT,—Some wheat Was net in Essex as early as July 4th, but the bar• vest in general extended from the middle Of July to the end of the first week of August ; in the nonan it was even labor, but rho busy season wits from July 15th to July 80th. The heavy rains of June and ninny severe wind Storms lodged a great deal of the grain. Rneb wits en- couraged in all the prinofpal wheat counties. Then oame a very hot July Willett ripened the grain a little too rapidly—blas result is that much of the grain is shrunken and light and the yield will not be so large its expected. In the cash, where grown, the quality is reported very good. The straw is a good yield, the yield of grain is reported good but the quality only fair. On bine whole the fall wheat Evill not turn out nearly so good a Crop aS that of Not year. Srnixe Wrinxr.—Harvesting wits in progress on August 10th over almost the entiraprovince, The general condition of spring wheat is reported'to be not so good as that of fall wheat. What little is grown in the west is light and much of it ruatea. The Lake Ontario and easb- arn counties report a fair crop in volume, under the average in quality, the moeb favorable reports being from Lennox, Hastings, Victoria, Lanark, Leads, Dun- das and Stormont. At preseut in Mne- koka and the other northern sections the general appearance is very promising. Taking the province as a whole the straw fail good crop the grain is in good quantity bub lighter than usual. Rush is repoctea from nearly every county ; the midge from Hutton, Peel and York, and the Hessian fly alio has done some damage. Bnm -y.—The excessive rain of June caused a rapid and rank growth of straw, the storms lodged a good deal, and its a consequence the larger portion of the barley is this year aisaoloved. It ripened too rapidly tinder the heat of July and August and the grain is not perfectly filled. The bosh reports its to bwo-rowed barley come from the east. Hinny nor - respondents think the season has been even more unfavorable for two -rowed than for Bix•rowed. Tile quantity of barley available and suitable for export for malbing will probably be very limited, much lees than in former years. OATs.—As was stated in prbv[oLie crop bulletins the early rams drowned out a oonsiderabla portion of the crop in low• lying and poorly drained land. The oats that survived those rains have cone on in fine oondition and are to -day very promising, although not tip to the very high yield of 1891. The harvest in the west will be a little late owing to rain and lodging—ib will be in full opernbion 1 between the 15th and 20th of August. The most promising reports come from the Lake Ontario, St. Lawreuoe std Obtawa and the East Midland counties. The northern district promises well, but it it too early yet to make very definite estimates. A few reports of rust and of poor yield through being blown. down are to hand, bub on the whole the crop is one of the most promising 0f those on our list. RYn.—Vary few reports as to rye have been received, but they are all gniba favorable, .PEAS.—Tbig Crop is very variable. In Essex, Sent, Lambton and Middlesex the crop may be Germed a failure owing to the early rains and the bugs. As we go amok and north bile condition is much improved, Along Lake Ontario the crop is fair, in the east Bome sections report splendid crops, others close by complete failures. On the whole the crop is much under bile average. BEANS.—This crop promises well hub ib is as yet a little early to be very accurate in making an estimate. The crop is a little late this year, Coax.—The garment condition and prospects of Elie corn crop are briefly summarised as follows :—Lake 17rie, late planted owing to rains, poor, not mare than half a crop ; Lako Huron, poor in Lambtmn, better it, Huron, best in Bence ; Georgian Bay, good in Gray and SimOoe ; Lake Ontario, good on the average, very good on well drained land ; St. Lawrence and Ottawa, fair to good ; Last Midland, good ; Nortoorn, little grown, fair. Most of ilia crop reported upon is for fodder pueposog. A conbinua once of warm weather will greatly im- prove the crop whish ie now growing .upidlya Un the wtiolb rho condition is fair, but aha quantity fa cat so large ma usawl. Ally d-„Cteuay of cern ensilage or foadbr corn, however, will be more than made up by the excess of hay this year. [TAY. --Tho best crop of (Ilia year is that of ttmottny ar,cl clover limy. 'the ha'vasting began in Essex on June 206h, and on August 10th there wne still a cOn- aiaoirablc acreage to be cub in 1vinskoka, Algmnaand Nipissing. For the target, portion of the province haying exteudod from the beginning to bits end of July When it was inlerrtipted by the rapid matliring of the fall wheat, Tile result of this is thnb much tiny was left until after the wheat had been Secured and there will doubtless be a considerable quantity over mature.
