A. Dulmage, of Lakelet, and Robert
Miller, of Turnberry, have announced
themselves as candidates to represent
Howick, Wroxeter and Turnberry at the
next County Couooil.
Jas. Leech received the sad intelligence
of the death of his niece, :tars. R. J.
Leeub, of Toronto. Mr. Leech attended
the funeral, which took plane on Wednes-
day. R. J. Leech was at one time one of
the leading business men of Gorrie.
We are sorry to have to record the sad
death from typhoid fever of Geo. Bush,
of this village. Mr. Rush was stricken
down in Winnipeg, which makes it more
sad. His wife was in the telegraph office
here malting inquiries about his health
when the message calve announcing his
death. Mach sympathy is felt for airs.

McDermott & Shaver shipped twenty
head of cattle to Toronto, but prides
were so low that after holding them there
for several days they reshipped them to

Thos. MoLanghlln purohased e. quarter•
acre lot, just South of Mr. Hutchinson's
residence for $100 from E. Phair. Mr.
McLaughlin intends erecting a residence
on it, and will have the foundation built

The members and friends of Trinity
church celebrated Thanksgiving this year
by a supper and entertainment on Wed-

NOTE,—The Chancery Divisional
Court at Toronto delivered judgment fn
the case of Speer° vs. Spears. Judge
Doyle, by reason of the death of the
senior judge, was solo judge in the County
of Huron in September, 1805. He beard
the evidence in this Bade in that month
and delivered judgment on 7th May,
1896. The Court holds that he had
jurisdiction, and having disposed of this
preliminary objection will bear the ap-
peal on its merits.

The initial meeting of the Exeter Curl-
ing Club was held in the Town Hall on
the 4th inst. N. D. Hurdon was assign-
ed to the chair and after a few prelimin-
ary remarks the following officers were
elected :—B. S. O'Neil, honorary presi-
dent,; Dr. J. A. Rollins, president ; John

The next ballot between Murdie and
Archibald resulted in a majority of two
for Murdie, and four blanks. Bo Murdie
will be the man in MuKillop.
Joseph C. Morrison, brother of John C.
Morrison, clerk of Mcliillop, was the
Populist candidate for the .North Dakota
State Legislature at the repent elections,
and at last acooants the returns showed
him defeated by only 16 votes, whichthe
official count may change to a majority.

reeve 001 Saturday, the 7th inst., to
select a oandidate for County Councillor,
about 25 turned out. Jas. Evans, Mich-
ael Murdie and William Archibald were
nominated as candidates. Evans and
Archibald agreed to leave it to the ma-
jority of the meeting as to which should
stand. Murdie said hie friends had
found fault with him in the past for
such agreements and would not promise
to abide by the decision of the meeting.
A ballot being taken, Murdie and Archi-
bald were ties and Evans two behind,

The farm contains 150 acres and has on
it a new bank barn and good frame house
with stone cellar. Mr. Ross has got a

the farm of Wm. Reedy, lot 13, on the
5th con., for $3,200. The farm contains
100 acres and is splendid value at this
figure.—John Barrie hoe rented his farm
on the 12th con. to John Jackson, of
Morris, for 6200 a year in advance. Mr.
Barrie intends retiring from farming and
will likely go to Seaforth to live.

past week for blood poisoning, but is out
of danger now ; the child ran e, rusty nail
in its leg, and for a time the case looked
serious.
One night recently a man met with a
peculiar accident, and he was fortunate
that it was not attended with serious re-
ults. Driving homeward by way of the
London road, his horse turned on the
railroad track, and it had not gone far be-
fore it tumbled into a cattle guard, the
man being thrown out on the track.
Assistance was at once seutired, but all
attempts to get the horse out of its pre.
