TELE OLD, OLD STORY.
He was one of the fellows
That could drink or leave it alone ;
With a fine high scorn for common man
Who were born with no backbone,
"And why," said be, "should a man of
^ strength
Deny to himself the use
Of the pleasant gift of the warm red
wine,
Because of its weak abuse 0"
He could quote at a banquet,
With a manner half divine,
Full fifty things the poets say
About the rosy wine ;
And he could sing a spirited song
About the lips of a lass,
And drink a toast to her fair young
worth
In the sparkling generous glees.
And since this lordly fellow
Could drink or leave it alone,
He chose to drink of his own wild will
Till his will wee overthrown.
And the lips of the lass aro oold with
grief,
And the ohildran shiver and shrink,
For the man who once could leave it
alone
Is a pitiful slava to drink.
THREE LITTLE KITTENS.
Three kittens in coats so gray,
West out with the Old Mother Cat one
day.
Said the first little kitten ; "If we only
might see
A monetrons great rat, what fun it would
be I"
Said the next little kitten : "I'd seize
holcl of his bead,
And bite him and equeeze him until "he
was dead."
Said the third little kitten : "Should I
see a rat
I'd eat Kiln all up in much lase time than
that."
Suddenly something jumped out of the
wood—
All three turned and ran as fast as they
could.
And never °nae stopped bill they 00015 to
their house ;
Yet it wasn't a rat but a wee baby mouse.
It was aanght and then eaten by Old
Mother Cat ;
Said the three little kittens : "Now just
think of that I"
YOU OAR NEVEII TELL.
You waver can tell when you send a
word—
Like an arrow shot from a bow
By an atelier blind—be it oruel or kind,
Just where it will ohanoe to go.
It may pierce the breast of your dearest
friend
Tippe(' with its poison or balm ;
To a stranger's heart in life's great mart
It may (tarry its pain or its calm.
Yon never can tell when you do an act,
Just what the roault may be ;
But with every deed you are (towing a
seed,
Though its harvest yott may not see,
Eaoh kindly Itch is an acorn dropped
In God's productive soil ;
Though you may not know, yet the tree
shall grow
And shelter the brows that toil.
Yin oan neeir toll what your thoughts
will do
In bringing you hate or fiye'1
For thoughts are things, and their airy
wings
Are swifter than carrier doves,
They follow the law of the universe—
Dash thing must create16s'kind ;
And they speed o'er the track tbo bring
you back
Whatever went out from your mind.
