Cober and wife returned on Sat• nrday of last week from a three week's visit to Prescott, Heepeler and Toronto. Bliss Hate Young and Miss Lottie Lake are visiting friends at Seaforlh and Clin- ton. They will also take in the Western Fair, London, before returning. The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper will be dispensed in Oranbrook next Sunday morning, and. on that mount there will be no service in the Presby- terian ahuroh here. D. Badgely has given up D. At a meeting of the school supporters held in the school room last Saturday, H. Torn Ranes teas elected trustee in place of Dr. Ferguson, who resigned in consequence of leaving town. On Saturday the funeral of the only daughter of Councillor Sims took plane from ber father's residence. The de- ceased had only been ill a few days, diphtheria being the clause of her death. The remains were taken to the Union cemetery for interment. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the whole oommenity. On Sunday morning a large congrega. tion was present in Trinity church to take part in the harvest thanksgiving service. The church had been beauti- fully decorated by the ladies of the congregation during the week. Rev. Mark Turnbull, of Goderiob, officiated, and preached a very suitable and eloquent sermon for the occasion. The speoial offertory amounted to $162. On Sunday afternoon Mrs. and Miss Allis Emigh and a lady friend were out driving, when they met with what might have been a serious aooident, bot, fortu- nately, they °soaped without injury. It appears when driving over the bridge at Potter's sideline the horse shied at a hole in the bridge, precipitating them into the creek and smashing the buggy. Donald Robertson and wife, who have spent four or five years in this country, purpose returning to Scotland this Fall where Mr. Robertson has the offer of a situation near Glasgow. Miss Halliday will give up ber school at Barrie'° at the aloes of this year, as she has made an engagement with the trustees of her home section, 1} miles west of Sunshine, at a good salary. Miss Halliday is an excellent teacher. An "anniversary tea" under the ans. picas of the Epworth League of Ebenezer will be held on Monday evening, Sept. 28th, at Ebenezer ahuroh. The burglar made hie entrance into the house of C. G. Campbell through the eollar, Mre. Campbell awoke while he was going through the drawers of the dressing ease in their bedroom, but was afraid to awaken her husband until after he had gone. A VETERAN Gogn.—A long and event- ful life was brought to a close on Monday, Sept. 7th, when Jae. Ferguson passed away in his 87th year, at the home of bis son-in-law, S. Irvine, lot 6, con. 6. Deceased came from Perth, Sootland, in 1816 with his parents, who came out at the time of the emigration of discharged soldiers at the close of the Napoleon wars. Although very young at that time he could remember until the day of his death seeing the bonfires blaze on Scottish hills over the viotory of Waterloo. His father settled in Lanark Co., there being at that time only one log house in what is now the town of Perth. For many years deceaeed was engaged in the lumber business in that county, and he together with a John Malayan, and another man were the first Europeans to explore the Mississippi River in Ontario. About 28 years ago he moved his family to the county of Huron, living for two years near Luoknow, and afterwards at St. Helen's. Six years ago he moved in- to Wingham, but Mrs. Fergnson dying soon afterwards and the family all being grown up be broke up housekeeping and has since lived with his children. He knew no illnes daring his life until a week before his death and few were more erect and agile than he even in hie old age. Mr. Ferguson saw active service in the rebellion of '87, being present at the famous Wind -mill encounter. He acted as foreman on one of the divisions of the Rideau Canal during its construction. In his boyhood days be was schoolmate of Maloolm Cameron, father of M. G. Cameron, M. P. A. F. M. P. for North Perth, and Duuoan Ferguson, postmaster, of Perth, are ne,hews of deceased. The members of the family surviving him are R. B. Ferguson, Chesley, Wm., of Morris, Mrs. Archie McGillivray, of Wingbam, and Mrs. Irvine, of Morris. Ge'©Y. Township Connell on Saturday, Oot. 8 rd.
