Some one informed him that Laurier had
decided to prohibit the running of special
trains on the 12th of Jelly and, also
ordered all the hotels to be closed. He
believed the yarn, and wenb storming
about for some time before he discovered
that the 12th fell on Sunday.
H. B. Chant has that completed for bis
brother, Prof. Chant, of Toronto Uni•
varsity, a clock, which is a model of fine
workmanship and finish, It stands 7
feet high, the ease &c. being beautifully
finished black walnut, while a monogram
surmounts the top. The (look has a
second band as well as the hour hands,
and an eleotrio alarm, and the great
merit of it lies in the fact that the cloak
and works entire are the product of Mr,
Chant's own labor, and is really a piece
of ornamental and useful furniture.

the Presbyterian church held its regular
July meeting on Tuesday of last week.
Rev, T. A. McDonald was appointed to
succeed Mr. Musgrave in the chair as
Moderator for the next six mouths. The
commissioners to the late assembly who
were present reported their diligence.
Revs. Robt. Henderson and Anderson
with Mr. Mcarath were appointed a
commibtee to strike standing committees
for the year. In accordance with the
instructions of the General Assembly
the committees on the state of Religion,
Temperance and Sabbath Observance

Work. Rev. R. Weir's application for
dmiseion into the Presbyterian church

An accident happened to John Snell,
borne dealer, which might have termin•
aced seriously. It seeing he was driving
along the road near Devon, leading a
horse, when in some manner the animal
got its front leg between the spokes of
the hind wheel, turning the buggy npeide
down and threatening serious regai e.
Mr. Snell, who was underneath the
buggy, wriggled out the best he could
from his unpleasant position and with
considerable diffionity got the horse
quieted down again, little the worse for
their escapade. Luckily, however, the
horses were nob wild, for if they had ever
stetted to run doubtlese Mr. Snell would
have been killed on the spot.

D. F. McDonald, tvho has been a reel -
dent of Parry Sound for many years, and
who is known by almost every citizen,
walked through the main streets of that
town the morning after the elections
totally unrecognized, When the Mac-
kenzie Government was put oat of power
in 1278 Mr. McDonald took a solemn vow
never to shave his face until the Liberal
party had coutrol of the country again.
He kept his resolve, and until the morn-
infi of the 2lth of Juno Iasi he wore a
noble beard. On that morning, however,
when he learned that the Liberals were
victorious, ho shaved off his beard, and ib
made such a change in bis appearance
that few knew him as the D. P. McDon-
ald of old.
John, the six•ycar•old son of George
Conn, of Toronto, was terribly lacerated
about the fano lad bead Monday by a
vicious Newfoundland dog, which attack-
ed the boy at play. The lad, accompani-
ed by several playmates had wandered
some distance from Homo and was play-
ing on Adams street Steubenville, Obis,
when a Newfoundland dog was espied
running; down the street towards them,
followed by a largo crowd of men and
boys. 411 of John's comrades ran and
succeeded in clambering to places of
safety but John did not realize his danger
and stood still, When too late, however
ensiled to run, but wag knocked down
by the dog, who commenced to new

young woman startedtowatds the animal,
who became frightened and ran away.
The dog would probably have killed the
boy had it aotbeen for tbo timely appear-
ance of the young lady.
