Me. Foster has been tolling the people
that they pay taxes on luxuries only, and
Haat they can avoid doing. so if they
oboese, The onebome bac ,e Certainly
not a tax on luxuries, It admits diam-
onds free, for example, while many of the
necessaries of life are heavily taxed. Bar
and pig iron, for instance, are taxed 45 to
60 per Dent. ; wall paper, 100 per cent, ;
syrup, 125 per cent, ; carpets, 40 per
cent, ; and oleau•rioe, 88 per cent, Mr.
Foster should be above attempting to
mislead the people. They know better
than to believe him.
A few years ago Reynolds' Newspaper,
a London Radical journal, thus referred
to Sir Charles Tupper :—"Tupper, the
rich snob, who looks after the interests
of Canadian Proteotioniets in London, is
to be dined at the Charing Cross Hotel
by the English Tories for having helped
Canadian Tories to keep their olutoh on
the throat of the Dominion in the recent
elections. This is really the meaning of
hie'eervioee to the Imperial connection.'
Tupper may or may not Care for the
Imperial eonnsetion,' but he has osrtain.
ly rendered .signal service to one person
during the Course of his not very glorious
oareer, and that one person is Sir Obarles
Tupper. When he first went into politics
he had nothing, now he is a wealthy
magnate, it is said a millionaire. If the
simple reader asks how this is done, the
answer is that oontraobs and politioal jobs
will carry a man a long way. Tupper is
a charaoteristio specimen of that odious
product of our time—the millionaire snob,
insolent to those he regards
ae his infer-
iors, cringing to those from whom he
wants anything. A fitter representative
of colonialplutooraoy could not be found."
