SHE LEARNED.
She knew not how to nook, she said,
In accents far from gay,
But afterward, when they were wed,
She roasted him each day.
A GREAT SPREAD.
Bisbee Susan's layer cape,
Penwipar like in style and shape,
The one she wore when Winter's blast
Blew keenly in the year that's past,
May now be seen in bold array
On Susan's little eister May ;
Likewise on Maude and Clara, too,
Sadie and Kate and sister Prue,
And if more girls should turn up there
She's several layers more to share.
THE BACHELOR.
Returning home at the close of day,
Who gently chides my long delay,
And by my side delights to stay ?
Who sets for me my easy chair,
Prepares the room with neatest care
And lays my slippers ready there ?
Who regulates the evening fire
And piles the blazing fuel higher,
And bids me draw my chair still nigher 2
When sickness comae to rack my frame,
And grief disturbs my troubled brain,
Who sympathizes with my pain ?
Nobody.
THE COUNTRY DOCTOR.
There's a gathering in the village that
has never been outdone
Since the soldiers took their muskets to
the war of sixby.one,
And a lot of lumber wagons near the
church upon the hill,
And a crowd el country people, Sunday
dressed and very etill,
Now eauh window is pre-empted by a
dozen heads or more,
Now the spacious pews are crowded from
the pulpit to the door,
For with coverlet of blackness on his
portly figure spread
Lies the grim old oountry doctor in a
massive oaken bed ;
Lies the fierce old country doctor,
Lies the kind old weary doctor,
Whom the replace considered with a
mingled love and dread.
Maybe half the congregation, now of
great or little worth,
Found this watcher waiting for them
when they owns upon the earth,
This undecorated soldier of n hard, nn -
equal strife
Fought in many stubborn battles with
the foes that sought their life.
In the night time or the day time be
would rally brave and well,
Though the Summer lark was filing or
the frozen lances fell,
Knowing if he won the battle they would
praise their Ilakar's name,
Knowing if he loot the battle then tbo
donor was to blame.
'Twee the brave old virtuous doctor,
'Twas the good old family doctor,
'Twas the faithful country doctor light-
ing stoutly all the same.
When go many pilled in sioknos8 hs had
stood so strongly by,
Half the people felt a notion that the
dootor couldn't die,
They must slowly learn the lesson how to
live from day to day,
And have somehow lost their bearings,
now this landmark is away.
But perhaps it still Is bettor that this'
busy life is done,

WORDS
WHICH YOUNG SPELL.
ERS MISS.
Stand up, scholars, now, and spell,
Spell plenaitistoeope and knell,
Or take some simple word as ohilly,
Or gauger, or the garden lily.
To spell some words as syllogism,
And lachrymose and synchronism,
And Pentateuch and saaohrrine,
Apocrypha and aa,laudiue,
Lactiferous and natty,
Jejune and homeopathy,
Paralysis and chloroform,
Phinocerous and pachyderm,
Metempsychosis, gherkins, basque ,
Is certainly no easy task.
Kaleidoscope and Tennessee,
lfamsohatka and dispensary,
Diphthong and erysipelas,
And etiquette and sassafras,
Infallible and ptyalism,
Allopathy and rheumatism,
And oataclym and beleaguer,
Twelfth, eighteenth, rendezvous, intri-
guer,
Tho hosts of other words are found
On English and on classic ground.
Thus Blaring Strait and Michaelmas,
Thermopylae, Cordilleras,
bmte, hemorrhage, jalap, Hanava,
Cinquesoil and ipecacuanha,
And Rappahannock and Shenanhoah,
And Schuylkill, and a thousand more,
Are words that scone good spellers miss
In dictionary lands like this,
Nor need one think himself a soroyle
If some of these his efforts foil.

Dna SIS.—After suffering for over a
year with pains in the stomach which
eventually passed over cad down my
right aide, I oonsulted two doctors. I
was told that nothing could be done for
me, and to go bo the Toronto hospital at
once, that I had an ulcer on the bowels.
I knew that there was a growth of some
sort there. I swelled out like a barrel,
T could not eat, as I suffered intense pain
if I did. I understood my case was one
for the knife, and expected nothing but
the worst. Well, I was told something
will be done for you anyway. I left
home with the intention of going to the
hospital, but changed my mind when I
remembered Mrs. K. Morrison's case, and
that you oured her, and I went to Gode•
rich now two years ago next March. T
bad not eaten anything for 48 bours
when I got there, and I was weak and
exhausted, mold not go up the doorsteps
without assistance. I remained five days
in Goderiah. I did nob believe I could be
onred. I took two large bottles of your
System Renovator and used two bottles
of E. A. McLennan's Liniment. I could
eat and rest well before I left Goderioh,
I was at my work as usual in two weeks
and since then enjoyed the best ofhealth
I have not been so well for years. My
ease was a surprise to all.
