Torten was a great tangle in the mails
from the East owing to the snow block-
ads. We had no mail East of Palmerston
on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. A
mail did arrive very late Saturday night
but only n few were a000mmodated.
Monday afternoon all the delayed mail
bags at rived and Peetmaster Farrow and
Assiatem Postmaster Ross had n busy

ade Is said to have been the worst known
for years.
AT the Public School Leaving examin-
ations held last July, the County of
Huron passed 141 eandidatee. This was
exactly the name number passed by the
whole of the following 18 counties :-
Brent, 1'rontenao, Lenora and Adding-
tdn, Lineup, Prescott and Russell, Glen-
garry, Northumberland, Stormont, Peel,
1,rince Edward, Dufferin, Oxford and
tarry Sound. No county except
dlesex came mar Huron, but Huron had
the lead by 21. Only two eounbies,
Simone and Kent, passed even half as
many es Huron.

DIED . -Last Monday night Liasie, be-
loved wife of Rev. T. Albert Moore, of
Paimereton, panned away to her reward
atter a trying illness of several months

ter to the oars of her husband. The
funeral service was oonduoted on Wed-
nesday afternoon at Palmerston after
which the remains were taken to Acton,
Halton Co., for interment. Deneased
was a cousin of Rev. J. L. Kerr's, Erns.
gels, Deceased was married to Rev. Mr.
Moore in 1884, and during bis pastorate
at Drnmbo, Princeton, Hamilton, Niag
are Falls and Denville, she was a most
effioient helpmate to her husband, and a
suoeesefal co worker in the cause to
which his Life wag devnted. Mr. Moore
is deeply sympathised with in his bereave-
ment,
HANDICAP D'IATOR.-The vigorous play of
the Brun' Is rinks with Wingham teem
last week led the juniors of town to assert
that the "old heads" could not bout them
18 shots, To settle thequeetiou two rinks
played on Friday 'Afternoon and theotber
two in the evening. The seniors upheld
the good opinion they had of themselves
winning by 13 shots after the handicap

A tather amusing law suit took place
at the Essex Assizes arising out of a
mistake by which the out of plaintiff's
brewery appeared in defendant's adver-
tisement. Tho parties settled after the
cave had been partly tried,
The town of Tilbury is having a great
deal of trooble with the water supply,
The town tae jot finished drilling a well
170 feet deep, but a suffioisnt supply
could not be obtaiued and the well was
abandoned. The town supplies the
Michigan Central Railway tanks with
water, but the company is complaining
about the poor system and threatens to
put in a small plant of its own and pump
the water from the lake. The only way
out of the trouble seems to be in the
erection of an extensive plant, by which
to get the supply from the lake. This
would eoet the town nearly $40,000.

Willie Slone, of Lexington, Ky„ might
have been converted into eagle food on
Wednesday of tbis week, Ho was play.
ing in the front yard of the borne of hie
father, W. J. Slone, whose house is at the
foot of Jones' Fork Mountain, one of the
highest of the Kentucky Ridge, when a
large eagle alighted on him and buried
his talons in his side. Willie is only two
years old, and is eomewbat small Inc his
age. Near him was his big and faithful
dog, which, upon hearing the cries of the
boy, ran to him just in time to catch the
eagle by the leg. The bird had made an
awkward piunge and had to settle, put-
ting one foot to the ground before ib could
rise. Mr. Slone was sitting in his door
and saw the eagle as 11 darted down from
the mountain side. Be ran at full speed
in the direction of the obild and arrived
in time to assist the dog in killing the
eagle and to releaoe the talon% of the bird
from .the boy's clothing and flesh. One
eye was out so bad that it isbelieved he
will lose his sight, and his left breast was
torn considerably, but the injuries are
not considered fatal. The bird in of the
gray angle variety and measures seven
feet from tip to tip.

Tonoara, March 24. -Toronto cattle
market was overstocked to -day. Re-
ceipts were 70 cars 130 far this week.
Butchers' cattle were slow for common ;
very few choice offered. Some Easter
cattle Bold at 810 to 3o per pound.
These ars the lowest prices ever paid
here at this season. Common sold at
210 and good to choice at 810. Four oars
were taken for Montaoal and one for
Ottawa. Sheep and lambs were steady.
Lambs Bold ab 4o to 41Ao per pound.
Sheep were in better demand to day, to
fill specie, and sold at 8o to 853o per pound.
Stockers and feeders dull ; stockers sold
at 210 to 810 ; light stockers, 210. to 210.
There was nothing done in export cattle,
Hoge were dull and weaker. There were
400 received the past two days. Beet
bacon hogs sold at no per pound.
Heavy stores sold at 93 70 per cwt.
