Tho Winter meeting of the Goderich
Bovine Association was held on the Hay-
market a few dayeago. Notwithstanding
the Arotio weather that prevailed the at-
tendance was large ; flee or six jags of
bay and straw on the market added to
the attraction, and the owners of these
precious articles of farm produce had a
lively time with whip in hand, and with
sweet toned voices, trotting around their
riga, keeping away some of the daring
and reckless members of the Association,
who went wild with joy at seeing so much
fodder, and had not Mr. Bull, the area.
dent, pot in an early appearance, it look.
ed serioc8 for the farmers, as the hungry
bovines were about to make a raid and
clean out the whole market. Fortunately
the wiser head of the Association nipped
the desperate plot in the bud, and saved
the Bovinitee from having another dis-
grace added to the long list now en record
against them,
Miss Jersey, the gentle secretary, read
over the roll call, while many of the older
members failed to bawl a response. On
enquiry being made it was hinted that
quite a number had daring the past few
months changed ownerships and several
bad been pulverized by coming in contact
with the interior workings of the sausage
machine. This naconnte for the high-
grade article of sausages the Goderichites
have enjoyed this Winter.
Old Mr. Sborttail was on deck and
looked spry. Although his tail is minus
a foot or so, the old fellow can still phase
snow flies with the best of them. Old
Onehorn was also present, be having got
a Christmae box (and probably more, now
and then) in the shape of e, tin horn.
This adds mush to the old chap's appear-
ance. As the horn is loaded with lead,
it is requested that garden owners and
others will give him a wide berth during
the oomieg season, as with this formid-
able horn very few old topers would care
to tackle hint. The New Woman, togged
out in bloomers, will also have to keep
her eyes wide open for the bovine with
the tin horn.
As Goderich is on the boom the Bovine
Association will b(l)oom and blossom the
coming season. We understand the new
mayor and council are a lot of perfect
gentlemen end the utmost good will and
friendly feeling, we trust, will prevail,
and even if the town is taxed for a few
barrels of nails and a wagon load of gate
binges and a few thousand feet of fencing
to make repairs, all this outs no figure as
compared with the exciting times during
the garden eeason when the Bovine As.
sociation has the freedom of Ibe town.
For neck and nerve the Goderich Bovine
Aeeoeiation will take the sake. Even the
Citizen's committee will back this As-
sociation.
The president, Mr. Bull read his an-
nual message, in regulat Grover Cleve-
land style and when he finished hie war-
like document "Bully for you," was bel-
lowed forth from the assembled bovines.
Owing to deep snow only two members of
the Saltford Association were present
and they looked seedy and weary on aa.
count of their being no hay market at
Slabtown.
During the meeting eeveral experiments
were made with the new photography by
cathode rays. A sensitized plate was en-
closed in a tight fitting ease plaited direct.
ly under the Crook's tube (Crook's Act
surely) at a dietanoe of about two feet
from old Shorttail's skull. The rays in
order to affect the plate had to penetrate
a hickory axe handle three and a half
inches think. The experiment was a big
success. Old Shorttails brain was seen
and Tom Edison, the electrical wizard's
thew was not in it this time. When the
ray was finished some of the following
beautiful thoughts were visible to the

The Dominion Grange.
The Dominion Grange met in London
last week,
The address of Worthy Master Ken.
nbdy, who is i11, was read and adopted.
The past year hall not resulted in any
gratifying additions to the membership.
The Grange, like every similarly.founded
institution, must expect seasons of de-
pression as well tie of prosperity. But
they were by no means discouraged, but
looked forward quite confidently to p121.
mate success. The Grange originated 80
years ago in the States, and enjoyed much
prosperity until discord crept in. But
the "stick•to it-iveness" of the few had
brought the Order through, and it waste,
clay one of the most progressive agricul•
tura) institutions in the United States.
And there was good reason for expecting
a revival in Canada. No organization
was so well adapted for bringing into
united whole all the conflicting elements
among the members of the agricultural
profession. Conahlding, the address
deprecated the influence of the sensation-
al newspaper.
The Committee on the Good of the
Order advised loyalty and energy on the
part of the members, and the "talking
up" of the Grange ; the exclusion of
political and religious questions, and the
holding of meetings regularly.
Discussion followed the report, which
was adopted.
The Executive Committee reported up-
on some subjects for legislation referred
to them last year. This related to the
packing and gracing of fruit, the amend.
ing of the Agricultural and Arts Associ-
ation Act, and the abolition of the grant
to the Central Farmers' Institute. The
Committee stated that they had been suc-
cessful in regard to the first and last
matter's, while the legislation sought for
regarding the Agricultural and Arts As•
sociation had been partially secured.
The report was adopted.
Acting Worthy Master Geo. E. Fisher
gave an address on topics for discussion
in subordinate Granges, dealing with
such subjects as : "How Plants Grow ;"
"Elements Which Compose Vegetable
Life ;" "The Fertilization of Blossoms
in Fruit and Grain Crops," and "Insects
Injurious to Fruit." Mr. Fisher demon-
strated how these and kindred topics
might be discussed to advantage in the
Granges.
The Committee on Legislation reported
recommending that the township coun-
cils be empowered to assess the town-
ships only once in five years. and the
abolition of the office of tax collector.
The report was vigorously opposed, but
was adopted.
The committee urged that the court of
revision would sit annually, where all
grievances or changes could be rectified,
and claimed that under the present eye.
tem the work was done in a very indiffer-
ent manner, and one roll was largely a
copy of the preceding one.
The objections put forward included
the claim that the assessors take an early
census for school purposes, and also that
by the proposed system many persons
would be left off the voters' lists. Diffi•
catty would also arise over non-residents.
The Legislating Committee recom-
mended the reduction of the minimum
number of, borrowers from a village free
library required to mere the Govern•
meet grant from 100 to 50 ; also that
railways in the Dominion be made
amenable to the Drainage A00.
The finding of the committee will be
sent to the different Governments.
A resolution was passed favoring the
reduction of the number of member's in
county councils, and opposing any sys-
tem which did not allow them to be elect-
ed by the direct vote of the ratepayers.
A question arising oat of the Lord's
Day Act was laid over until the Supreme
Court eball have handed down its de-
cision.
The officers were nominated end elect-
ed by ballot for the tabooing year, the re-
sult being tie follows :-

visible. A New Woman was seen hnet-
ling around with an old broom "ebooiug"

green ; a small boy could be seen hanging
on to a young gentleman calf's tail, having
lots of fun, and a big useless dog (who ie
hid in the hay, left when the fat assessor
oath) was bow -wowing at Miss Heifer's
maiden auntie, old Airs. Cherry, who sup.

worked citizens of Goderich at five cents
