New York is evidently determined to keep at the top of the heap even if they run the risk of being the laughing stock of the world, Wo are pleased to see that Sir Oliver Mowat intends looking into the question of the maintenance of Government House and with this object in view has moved that a Committee' of ten, consisting of Messrs. Mowat, Bronson, Dryden, Fergie: sots, Haycock, Howland, i17oNish, Mc- Pherson, Master and Whitney, repre- senting the Liberals, Couservatives and Patrons, consider all questions to the future maintenance or otherwise and re• port thereon to the Legislature. Tis "sassy" man who runs the Clinton Record had another bad spell this week and loads up' bis paper with a lot of "awash" that his subscribers won't thank him for. He calls D. McGillicuddy "bbe. Goderich liar," and the Editor of Tas. POST "local preacher Kerr" and thereby gets even all around. Now, we will ask yon a civil question, Mr. Record, which you atm answer with yes or no and you will satisfy the public, and the answer will prevent you from frothing at the mouth in the weeks to come. Did yon, along with Dr. Freeborn andD. Cantelon, I or otherwise, send a telegram to Hon. N. Clarke Wallace asking him to use bis in- fluence to have Newman taken out of west Huron, or words to that effect ? Mr. Newman says you did and you rather dodge the question by palling names and thereby degrading the Columns of your own paper. Is it Yes' or No ? It is said by some Etat the Government :lave made the Bill strong On purpose to oauee its defeat, and tliweby attempt this way to pour oil on tbo troubled waters for both Protestants and Roman Oatholioe. Mr. Baker taking the place of 'Hon, Mr. McInnes. Dr. Bourinot, the highest constitution- al authority in Canada, states that if Parliament expired by the effiuxiou of time, the Government would be compel- led to take immediate steps for the gener- alelections. It would not as some sup- posed, do for the Government to cling to power. Dr. Bourinot says that the only interval that would elapse between the expiry of the :time of this Parliament and the electing of another would be such time as would be necessary to make the writs returnable. The Toronto Week says :— There is something very small and low in trying to make political oapital out of the loyal. ty ory. It must be a weak cause which rests for support on such foundation as. that. We do not know that Conserve,. dues are any more loyal than Liberals, They talk more about it, but that is . of very little significance. For the Conser. vatives to say that Liberals are not loyal to British connections and institutions is to say that half Canada is disloyal, and than would be ludicarously untrue. The Conservatives of Cape Breton telegraphed Archbishop Walsh of To. rondo, asking his opinion of theDominion Government'sremedial legislation policy. The Mail -Empire pnblished a despatch stating that he answered that he regard- ed it as entirely satisfactory. On being interviewed in regard to the matter, His Grace stated that all he told them was that "inprinmple he was nob opposed to it," but he distinctly avoided expressing his approval of the coercion policy of the Dominion Government The chief features of Mr. Foster's finan- cial statement were that the net debt of the Dominion on the 30th of June, 1805, was 2253,074 927 that in the two last financial years expenditure exceeded the income 25,364,000; that the expenditure in 1804-95 has been 238,182,000, being the greatest in the history of the country, and more than half a million in excess of the preceeding year, and as the revenue only totalled $34,000,000, there was conse- quently a deficit of $4,000,000 ; that there has been a decrease in revenue of 02,306,- 568, a decrease in imports of 27,841,472, and a decrease in exports of $8,886,146. As to the future Mr. Foster could hold out no hope that the steady growth of the debt would. cease. Without doubt the most serious part of the financial situ- Miouis found in the enormous national debt. The total is $318,000,000. Even the net indebtedness of $253,000,000 is an increase of 87,000,000 over last year. The interest alone on this indebtedness absorbs, as above stated, ten and one half millions annually ; and, if we add sink- ing fund and cost of management, we have, 82,165,000 more. Here is a total of nearly twelve and three-quarter mil- lion dollars a year, or considerably over one-third of our grossincome, for debt charges. This is a serious condition of affairs. A well known'politioiau said at Ot- taws, Saturday night . 'This is the 8th day of February. Parliament, it is be. lieved, expires by °Illusion of time on April 25th. Betweeu these dates there are 76 days. Deduoting Saturdays and Sundays, there are 56 days for actual work. Other ten days must be allowed as private members' days. In the 46 days left' to the Government, they hopre. to put through the Renleclial Bill and the Supply Bill, the two measures in which they have a vital interest. The oppo- sition to the school bill is so pronounced that I do not believe that that measure can be got through in that Lime, Mr. McCarbhy, Mr. O'Brien, Me. Wallace; Prof. Weldon and others will oppose it at every stage, Maj. Hughse has also made a similar declaration, If this hi so they eau take up many claye in balking against the bill on ire general principles,. and every Clause in it, They say they will tenor let it get one of committee., In regard to the supplies, the Opposition have, it is believed, determined to fight' every item, and prevent any sum, big or bale] being voted. They have deolared that if the Government got a supplybill through, they need not go 10 the aountry until March, 1897, and they intend to run no Such risk."
