R. Common has shipped several oar
loads of turnips to Buffalo this season.
O. H. Broadloot is laid up with a severe
siege of typhoid fever at the residence of

Harry Town had the misfortune to get
one of his bands severely out while work-
ing with glass, one day recently.
Samuel Bennett, of the planing mill,
bad three of his lingers badly oat which
will neoessitate his laying off work for
several days.
James Scott, jr., has had an hydraulic
ram placed near the Roxboro river, and
now has the water pumped from the
river to hie stables, for his stook.
The celebrated tenor, Harold Jarvis, of
Detroit, will appear in Cardnos' Hall on
Monday evening, November 25th, under
the auspices of the Christian Endeavor
Society.
George A.. Sills gave notice that at the
next meeting of council he would intro -
dune a by-law to raise money for the pur-
chase of a bell for the town building, and
the ereotion of the same, the purchase of
an electric fire alarm system for the town,
and for hose and fire appliances required.

No. 813,held a
special literary and inimical entertain-
ment
in their Hall at Winthrop on Tues-
day evening, the 5th, which was a very
enjoyable and successful affair. The
chair was occupied by Worshipful Mast-
er Bro. R. Scarlett, whose happy re-
marks in the ohair from time to time
were well received by the large audience
and contributed not a little to the success
of the evening's proceedings. The pro.
gram oonsieted of readings, recitations,
vocal and instrumental musio by Win-
throp's most popular talent, and the per -
feat manner in wbieh each number watt
rendered would havo done credit to en-
tertainers of a professional standing. A
substantial silver collection was taken up
at the close of the entertainment, which
was donated to the Lady 'Prue Blue
Lodge, and for which Miss Boyd, in be-
half of the Lady True Blues, made a
neat reply of thanks. After the enter.
tainment refreshments were served by
the Lady True Blues to which, it ie
needless to say, all did ample justice.
The entertainment was ane of the most
thoroughly enjoyable ever given by the
members of Winthrop L. 0. L.

Porter is improving, and hope soon to
bear of his complete recovery.

bent of Leeburn and Goderich Tp. Pres.

Sabbath, Nov. 17th, anniversary servi-
ces were held in North-st. Methodist
church, when Rev. G. W. Henderson,
chairman of Sarnia District, occupied the
pulpit morning and evening.
The regular Fall meeting of the West
Huron Farmer's Institute willbe held on
Nov. 28th at Holmesville, and at Gode-
rich on Nov. 20th. Dr. Mills, Presinent
of the 0. A. 0., and J. I. Hobson, of
Mershon', will address these meetings,
assisted by local talent.
A meeting of the Children's Aid Assaoi-
ation of the County of Huron wee held
in the office of the Secretary, Mr. time,
in the Court House, when the oonatitn-
tion and By-laws of thie Aesooiation were
adopted, and the declaration of incorpor-
ation was signed by the membere.
A series of meetings will be held in the
North -at. Methodist church school -room
on Monday acid Tuesday, the 25th and
26th, under the an5pioee of the Normal
Inatitute branch of the Provincial Sab-
bath School Association, conducted by

S. S. Cooper's new factory is certainly
a big improvement over the old one, and
he has lost no time in having it rushed
up. It is 62x75 feet in size, two stories
high ; the brick work. was oommenoed on
the 7th, the men losing part of the,8bh,
owing to raln, and this part of the work
was completed last week.
The work of extending the eleobrio
light to the Hoose of Refuge is being
pushed forward;the poles are all up and
the wiring is eing done as quickly me
possible. It took about 60 poles to carry
the wire, and the post of the wire itself,
to say nothing of the work and the inter-
nal wiring at the armee,. is 0165, so that
it will take the Company- some time be-
fore it makes one cent on the contract.

The brick work of Mr. Hammond's
new residenoe is completed.

The prospeota are that Gorrie will
have electric light in the near future.
Within the last week or eo many of the
farmers around Gorrie have had some of
their geese stolen.
David Sanderson has a large owl in his
window. Hie owlship was caught by
John Day, just North of this village.
We are pithead to learn that Miss
Martha Keine, who met with a painful
aeoident a short time ago, is improving.

handsome new residence in the North
end of the town, just South of Mrs.
James'.
Walter Evans, eldest son of John
Evans. of this village, has been elected
Vice.President of the Young Liberal -
Conservative Oleb of London.
Vick Eastern, who has been baking fur
Mr. Copeland, left for Devil's Lake,
North Dakota, to take the plane of his
brother, who was accidently shot a short
time ago.
Tuesday evening, 26th inst., Rev. Josias
Greene, formerly pastor of the Methodist
church, but now of Fullerton, will de.
liver an address in the Methodist church
on his recent visit to Europe.

Luoknow is now well off for toneorial
artists, their being three in the village.
Nearly one hundred fat bulls have been
shipped from the Luoknow station to the
Old Country markets within the past few
weeks.
Dr. Garner returned from his trip to
Algoma, looking hale and hearty. He
brougbt home with him about 50 part-
ridges and a large number of rabbits.
John Stewart, while working in his
father's sash and door factory, had the
thumb of his right hand badly bruised,
and a portion of the nail taken off, by
being naught in the cogs of the governors.
A young man of respectable appear-
ance and a stranger, stole e, pair of Cor-
dovan Bal. those, with toe nape and mak-
ers name—John MoPhereon, Hamilton—
stamped on soles, from John Peart, of.
this village.
The constable wants to take a walk
up Havelock street, as a gang 'of rowdies
make it a point to atone the house of
Neil Molnnis when he is away, they are
too cowardly to do so when he ie there.
Mrs. Molnnis and children, have on more
than oneocaasion been compelled to leave
the house and seek shelter at the house of
a neighbor.
On Tuesday afternoon of last ween
three young men strnak the town. From
half•paet four until 8 p. m. they remain-
ed in McGarry', hotel, when they went
out. After the late train came in two of•
them went to Mr. Moore's at the station.
In the morning a gold watoh belonging to
Miss Moore was missing, and the village
constables got out warrants for their ar.

and brought back to the village. One of
them had remained in Luoknow selling
spectacles, and as he was suepeated of
being In league with the others, he was
